Dr Newport spoke to the BBC about how seeing injured children and families torn apart in #Gaza made him think of his own wife and child.
"We're all humans, and this could be us facing these apocalyptic, conflict type scenarios. And I would be hopeful that if it were us suffering in this way that people would come to our aid."
I'm keen to keep doing this sort of humanitarian work in, in the long term and to be able to instill in my daughter Meredith that doing that sort of thing and, and, and committing yourself to periods abroad in humanitarian work is, is entirely normal and should be, should be encouraged. But I just have to remind myself that, you know, we're all humans in this is this could be us facing sort of apocalyptic conflict type scenarios. And I'd just be hopeful that if it was us that was suffering in this way, that people would come to our aid. And, you know, as long as, as long as there's a need in Gaza and as long as the local staff are turning up for work every single day despite living in this unimaginably hard circumstances, then I'll just, I'll just keep going back and, and, and doing what I can. Having children of your own changes the way that people relate to all sorts of things. Does it change the way that you see the terrible injuries that you see to the little? I think so. And it, it, it is really hard that, that, you know, 40% of the traumatically injured patients that we received through UK Medfield hospitals are children. And seeing them, you know, covered in sand with gunshot wounds, blasts, amputation of limbs. And for me it just makes me think children sand combined should be fun holidays, you know, making memories on the beach, which is where we are. Operating out of and to see them coming in with these disastrous, disastrous injuries is just, it is hard and it does, it does sort of make me. Flick back home and think of my own wife and child. When I just see injured children and families, you know the that are torn apart.
May you be safe and Able ..Great work
