📣 Happy to announce that our institute at Sinai Health has two new faculty positions open for the broad area of Population Health Data Science, with focus on: (i) Infectious diseases: communicable disease epidemiology, mathematical modelling, pathogen genomics and phylodynamics, etc; or (ii) Population data linkage: Development and application of innovative analytical approaches, such as machine learning algorithms for longitudinal, etiological, prognostic or comparative analysis, based on connection of population data, e.g. electronic medical records, administrative and laboratory databases, and geospatial information at the national or international scale. The health topic areas can include but are not restricted to, perinatal/maternal-child health, cancers, cardiometabolic conditions, autoimmune diseases and other complex diseases. Successful candidates will be cross-appointed at the appropriate departments in the University of Toronto and integrated into the large network of data scientists affiliated with the at the Data Sciences Institute, University of Toronto. Excited to share a significant milestone in my journey towards a career in healthcare management! I recently completed a transformative one-week module on Epidemiology and Biostatistics, guided by the inspiring leadership of PUNEET KHANDUJA Sir. This module was a deep dive into the fascinating world of public health, focusing on how we can utilize data to better understand and address health challenges affecting communities. Through this program, I gained a strong foundation in: 1. The core principles of epidemiology, which help us understand the patterns, causes, and effects of health conditions in populations. 2. The role of biostatistics in public health, equipping me with tools to interpret data, assess health risks, and evaluate interventions. 3. Practical skills in analyzing health data, identifying critical trends, and transforming those insights into actionable strategies for improving community health outcomes. A major highlight of the program was my presentation on Cohort studies, where I explored the methodologies used to summarize health data, identify patterns, and draw meaningful conclusions. This exercise enhanced my ability to critically evaluate health data and develop strategies for addressing population health challenges effectively. I am deeply thankful for the unwavering support and guidance of Dean Keerti Bhusan Pradhan and my mentor Dr.Gurneet K Dhanda, whose mentorship enriched my learning experience. I found the course "The Pathogen Genomics: A New Era in Global Health Surveillance and Strategy" by Wellcome Connecting Science Learning and Training to be very insightful. This course equipped me with the knowledge of various applications of genomics in understanding infectious disease dynamics and epidemiology surveillance. I learned that genomics was more than just a diagnostic tool. Here are some key takeaways: ✨ Whole genome sequencing (WGS) can be used to monitor resistance against multiple microbes in parallel, helping differentiate AMR evolution versus spread. ✨ The concept of pathogen X is useful in monitoring unknown microbes and help in pandemic preparedness. ✨ Researchers would benefit from more education about the policymaking process, as this will help them to target their communication with policy stakeholders in a way that is more likely to produce the desired uptakes of their research data. The impact of genomics data is far reaching and the possibilities are endless when we can apply our research. I enjoyed learning from all the tutors who shared their knowledge and experience in the field. Thank you Wellcome Connecting Science Learning and Training for providing such a useful resource. I'm eager to apply my newfound knowledge and skills. This past Saturday I hosted a reunion for students who have been in the #HumanStudiesLab at Kennesaw State University. These students committed to many hours in a secured lab on campus conducting real #research on real medical data. They have given #posterpresentations of their work, drafted manuscripts and conference abstracts, and some have even become authors on #publications. Working with these students on such important work is a rewarding experience. It was great to celebrate the legacy that they built for future generations of researchers in the Kennesaw State University - School of Data Science and Analytics #HumanStudiesLab. We work hard, but have fun while working. This picture shows the impact of #HighImpactTeachingPractices, small class sizes, and #ExperientialLearning on #studentsuccess. Hearing their stories of how the lab prepared them for their future careers and changed their lives is #studentsuccess at it's best.
