𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: Find a supply chain angle for Labor Day without falling back on just saying that people buy stuff and supply chain people ship that stuff. 𝗠𝗲: Hold my 🍻. Like those 40% Labor Day discounts you’re grabbing right now? Go thank your local supply chain pro - there’s some serious history there. As a matter of fact, Labor Day in the US actually started with supply chain strikes in the forefront. Back in the 1890s (when freight was 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 not digitized - we're talking seventy years before EDI!), railroad workers were fed up with low wages and brutal working conditions. Labor strikes had been ramping up since the 1880s. This led to a Chicago strike that went violent in May of 1886 (Google “Haymarket Riot” - it’s not a country punk band). This helped encourage even more organized labor and already saw Labor Day being established on the state level in some areas. Then, in 1893, George Pullman slashed wages for a large chunk of rail workers at Pullman…and fired the rest. The unions kicked in, leading to a spiral that saw the American Railway Union boycott any train that used a Pullman car. Rail traffic - and, by extension, commerce - grinded to a halt in half the country. By July 7, the Pullman Strike saw casualties. After rioters vandalized cars in Chicago, National Guardsman opened fire on the crowd killing dozens of people. Throughout this entire process, awareness of organized labor was rising, to a large part due to the very vocal strike. On June 28th, 1894 President Grover Cleveland signed the bill declaring Labor Day a national holiday. So today it may be more about sales than strikes but, of course, supply chain still plays a critical role in the fabric of global commerce and the specter of strikes continue. Only last month, the Canadian government arbitrated a last-minute cancellation of a massive strike. So, while you’re out there enjoying the sales, take a moment to appreciate the folks who keep everything moving—from the people on the frontlines to those behind the scenes making sure goods get where they need to be. They’re the reason you can score that awesome deal today, and their work is what keeps the world turning, one train car at a time. #supplychain #laborday #themoreyouknow

Did you know the first Labor Day celebration was a strike? In 1882, several different unions based in New York City came together under the direction of the Central Labor Union in the hopes of organizing together around shared interests. The problem was, that their employers would not give them a common day off to meet because Labor Day was not widely recognized yet. So they decided to strike instead. They marched in a parade, had a giant picnic, and the New York Tribune reported many, "long, dull political speeches." 😂 Doesn't seem that different from today, does it? Do you know what they did accomplish? - They raised collective awareness of Labor Day, where steam gathered around the first Monday of September being a day off to recognize the contributions of American workers. - They strengthened their collective interests, particularly caps on working hours, and reduced the workweek from six to five days a week. Seems like pretty basic rights, huh? But these weren't a given at that time, and unions formed a powerful force for worker protection and advocacy. I love how bold and courageous these workers were for their time. How they aligned around common interests and fought like hell for it. United Auto Workers is a modern-day example of that happening in real-time again. Imagine if we aligned around collective interests more often. Just imagine. ❤️ ___________________________________________ ♻ Repost if you liked this message 📨 DM to learn more about working together ➕ Follow me for more content like this 📧 Subscribe to You Belong Here: https://lnkd.in/gqMquD5j
