New product: Moonlight Pipes Bent Volcano Handmade Briar Pipe, New While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern. Of all of the various design elements that are constantly being innovated or updated in pipe-making, one that has received far less attention than others is texture. Many pipe-makers pride themselves on improvements made to smooth and sandblasted finishing techniques, but far fewer explore new approaches to other finishes, such as rustication styles. This pipe from Ondrej’s Moonlight make has its own ideas regarding the broad latter category. It is a partially smooth finished volcano shape with an under-slung shank, but the shank and the base of the bowl are hand-carved with a sinewy patterning reminiscent of the fibers of tree bark. Comparisons may be drawn to Paul Larrysson Hubbart’s tree trunk pokers, though while Larrysson tended towards species such as the English oak for inspiration, Ondrej appears to have chosen something like a corkscrew willow or a coastal tea tree. The smooth areas of the bowl are beautiful too, though, being covered in bird’s-eye briar patterns and a brown-sugar stain. New product: Ben Wade Danish Hand Model 100 Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates While Ben Wade was a historic British pipe brand, for a time during the 1970s, production of Ben Wade pipes was contracted out to one of Danish pipe-making’s superstars: Preben Holm. Though he would tragically pass away at the age of 42, Holm was one of the pioneering figures in the ‘Danish design’ movement in 20th century pipe-making, a movement that still dominates the high-grade pipe scene. By hand-shaping his pipes on a belt sander, Holm was able to make the most of the patterns of grain hidden within briar, creating spectacular works of pipe art that looked just as good as they smoked. Owing to Holm’s untimely passing, his pipes are even more highly sought after than they were during his lifetime. The Preben Holm workshop was nothing if not versatile. Some pipes were quite traditional in style (the Traditional models, for example); others were more organically-inspired compositions (such as many of the Prominence and Designer models). This particular pipe from Holm’s workshop is, however, expressive of an aesthetic that is quintessential for the Danish freehand pipe. It is bold, sharp, and almost aggressive in its shaping, yielding a thoroughly assertive design. It also wears a deep, ring grain sandblast that further adds to its rugged profile. The condition is good. The pipe was clearly a faithful companion to its previous owner, resulting in a build-up of inner rim darkening.
