Last week Ruben Brave, founder of the Dutch New Narrative Lab, and Maud van Merriënboer, researcher and PhD candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), had the honor of meeting with the board of Gemeente Amsterdam, stadsdeel Zuidoost - Tanja Jadnanansing, Simion Blom and Vayhishta Miskin. In this meeting we presented key findings from DNNL's RoundTable sessions at our first unConference, bringing the community's challenges and strengths directly to policymakers. Discussions were enriched by Maud's research on 'Inclusive Entrepreneurship for Diverse Technologies'. 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬. This opened a dynamic conversation about our shared aspirations for advancing diversity in innovation and entrepreneurship. Maud offered compelling insights that challenge the status quo arguing: "The current approach to identity work in entrepreneurship fundamentally fails to provide equal opportunity. It not only deprives us of technologies innovated by and for women and people of colour, but also unjustly places the burden of change on these underserved groups. We invite them to learn how to pitch, network, and "fit in" - essentially teaching them to play by the rules of a fundamentally rigged game. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫? 💡 This bold perspective sets a transformative agenda for our collaborative efforts with policymakers and other stakeholders toward inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship. Excitingly, this dialogue led to the official launch of the Social Enterprise Launchpad at Zandkasteel Amsterdam, a vibrant co-working and meeting space in the heart of Zuidoost. We were privileged to be joined by Simion Blom, a distinguished member of the Executive Board. His support underscores Zuidoost's role as an emerging hub of diverse innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, set to make a significant impact on the city's entrepreneurial landscape. As we continue to spotlight and support the innovative change-makers often overlooked by society, we are excited about the possibilities ahead. Together, we are committed to building a brighter, more inclusive and open-minded future.
