Klebsiella oxytoca in Simmons citrate agar Citrate utilisation test is one among the IMViC tests. It test the ability of an organism to use citrate as a sole source of carbon and ammonium salts as a sole source of nitrogen.Citrate is broken down by the enzyme citrase into oxaloacetate and acetate. Pyruvate and carbon dioxide are then produced by further breaking down oxaloacetate. When carbon dioxide is released, ammonium salts are metabolized, producing sodium carbonate and ammonia, both of which raise the medium's alkalinity above pH 7.6, the medium's bromthymol blue indicator changes from green to Prussian blue due to the pH shift. Citrate positive organisms include Pseudomonas sps, Klebsiella sps,Serretia,Enterobacter etc
