During the pandemic, we saw a rise in clients selecting architects through a (usually) poorly paid design competition. Although this process was lamented as hurting the industry, we recently read an interesting article written by Gethin Davinson which offered an intriguing counter-point. In his article “‘Beauty’ in architecture can’t be enforced – but design competitions could help architects strive for it” written for The Conversation, Davinson makes a case for the design competition. Initially drawing on precedents in the English planning system, which include ‘beauty’ as an explicit objective in an attempt to reduce NIMBY-ism – a key factor holding back crucial housing developments – Davinson suggests that design competitions could be a way to move forward. How does one design beautifully though? Who could be a fair judge of this subjective trait? In Sydney, although beauty isn’t mandated, the design process is and the pursuit to find ‘design excellence’ is highly regulated… but is it working? We think most would argue that it’s not. Davinson says: “Design competitions have a reputation for being costly and unpredictable, but they don’t need to be. The UK government wants to better enable communities to take control of their housing future. Competitions are a proven way of engaging members of the public in debate about the relative merits of different designs for a site or area. There’s no reason why those members of the public couldn’t also be part of the judging process.” Importantly, I wonder what effect this would have on architects, how can we ensure the increased time and effort are rewarded fairly? Join Larch Lab at the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture A’24. The #thoughtleadership of Larch Lab’s founder Michael Eliason, AIA will be on display with two sessions at this year’s annual event. We are looking forward to standing with the architecture and design industry’s top architects and thought leaders. Check out Larch Lab’s presentation line up below, and watch for updates here on linkedin. Session: The #ClimateChange #Liability Storm: Is Your Practice Prepared? Date: June 6, 4:00 pm EST Panelists: Michael Eliason, AIA Founder – Larch Lab / Monte Paulsen, Director – Climate Ready Buildings Group In 2014, the Supreme Court of California found that architects owe a duty of care to occupants and residents of buildings. The rapidly deteriorating weather due to climate change is affecting buildings in ways out-of-date energy models could never have predicted. These dangerous situations include extended wildfire smoke events, deluges dropping more water than roofs and drains can handle, and overheating due to poor design—which can become deadly. This crucial conversation will explore building threats from climate change extremes, ways to mitigate them, and possibilities for reducing risks and liability as planners. _____________________________________________________________________________ Session: Bridging the Housing Gap: The Rise of Single-Stair Apartments Date: June 6, 4:00 pm EST Panelists: Michael Eliason, AIA Founder – Larch Lab / Sean Jursnick, AIA Associate – Shears Adkins Rockmore Architects / Stephen Smith, Executive Director – Center for Building in North America / Eduardo Mendoza, Policy Director – Livable Communities Initiative. In countries around the world, single-stair apartment buildings (also known as point access blocks) are the dominant type of multifamily housing. They provide housing for a range of households, even on sites that in the United States would be deemed too small for multifamily development. Join this seminar for exciting revelations from a group of panelists working to change how the United States views multifamily housing. You’ll hear about the research confirming that single-stair multifamily housing expands diversity in neighborhoods, provides affordable housing to a wider range of households, promotes walkable communities, and prioritizes safety and wellness.
