It was wonderful to spend time with my friends Tim Flanagan Jr, CLU, ChFC, CFP, ChSNC, CFBS and Amanda Kramer on the Winning Through Culture podcast. Among a number of leadership topics, we discussed...
1) The difference between a role and an identity
2) My book, Lead Like You Were Meant To
3) How organizations can encourage leaders to lead from authenticity

Enjoy this short clip about how I coach leaders to use curiosity to test their assumptions.

The antidote for assumptions is curiosity. Assumptions, by the way, are like autopilot. We are using them all the time. We have to use them. We have to use them. Leaders. Leaders have to use assumptions because leaders rarely have 100% complete and accurate information about a person or about. Their motivations. So we're in the habit of using assumptions all the time. The problem comes when we start making them about our coworkers, our team members. And so the, the, the antidote is, is to ask questions rather than to just charge blindly and on autopilot forward with our assumption. And a great way to ask the question is to position it like this. I have an assumption that you're frustrated over what we've just talked about is I'm curious. As to how you're feeling about the topic we just talked about? And and so you're saying it's a story in my head. So you're owning it and you're acknowledging it's a story. It may or may not be true, but then you're inviting the other person to hopefully speak the truth of what they know about that instead of you just charging ahead blindly having labeled them, you know, this certain negative way.
