October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, in 2024, an estimated 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. Early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early with adequate diagnosis and treatment, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured or avoided with prophylactic advancements. As a BRCA2+ woman. I am no stranger to the process. Women testing “positive” for a BRCA 2 mutation have a 70% lifetime risk of breast cancer and a 25% lifetime risk of ovarian cancer. Annual screenings are key to early breast cancer detection. Early detection saves lives.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, let's take a moment to reflect on the progress we've made and the challenges we still face in the fight against breast cancer. Despite significant advances in prevention and treatment, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the U.S., accounting for 1 in 3 female cancer diagnoses. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death among women. It's also crucial to remember that breast cancer affects about 1 in 860 men in the U.S. Unfortunately, men are often diagnosed at later stages than women because they undergo screenings less frequently. If you have a family history of breast cancer or fall within the recommended age range, it's important to schedule your breast cancer screening. Early detection saves lives.

Today, on National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, we pause to honor the lives lost and the courage of those still in the fight. Every single day, 120 women and men in the U.S. lose their lives to metastatic breast cancer-cancer that has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body. Despite advancements, there is still no cure. Metastatic breast cancer accounts for nearly all breast cancer deaths. Yet, only a fraction of breast cancer research funding goes toward studying metastasis. We must do more. More funding, more research, and more attention on finding new treatments and extending lives. To those living with metastatic breast cancer: We stand with you every day, in every way we can. We fight beside you for a future where this disease no longer claims lives too soon. Together, we can make a difference.

It's Breast Cancer Awareness month and National Mammography Day, an annual campaign to raise awareness of this complex disease and to remind all women their best defense is early detection. Overall, women in the United States have a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Detect it early, treat it early - Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. In addition to yearly mammograms, Breast self-exams is a useful tool. https://lnkd.in/e6cZyHdp Screenings are typically recommended at age 40, but their are reasons individuals may get screenings earlier. Regardless of your age or risk factors, it is always smart to focus on breast health and regular screenings, as well as getting your annual physical. Talk to your PCP to see if a screening is right for you. 🎗️
