Everyone experiences stress to some degree but if you’re living with high levels of ongoing stress, you’re putting your entire well-being at risk. Stress is a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. Stress is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives. In the short term we can get a high from stress that can trigger our fight or flight response and allow us to throw ourselves into a task. However when there is no break from stress it can do so much damage to your emotional equilibrium, as well as your physical health. It narrows your ability to think clearly, function effectively, and enjoy life. The pressures that can create stress will always keep coming. Always another project, never enough hours in the day, family commitments, ever increasing bills. You might not be able to control these factors, but you have a lot more control than you might think. These factors alone do not automatically create stress, it is the inability to cope or see a path forward that creates the stress. That is why it is critical for you to always concentrate on your own self care and wellness. And when it gets busy or stressful double down on your self care not the other way round. Also reach out for support from those around you. You can and will get through your stressful times. I recently noticed that my stress levels were gradually creeping up, and when I reflected on it, I realised that my self care had dropped away for a few weeks. Stress slowly makes you switch off tasks and activities that bring you joy. So be aware and if your self care has slipped, get back into it. Check out the two articles in the comments that give some great detail on the impacts of stress and how to protect yourself.

However, what the effect of that stress has on men is much different from it is in women. Men are more likely to respond with stress by becoming depressed. The challenge we face is that at stress is SO COMPELLING. I just spent a weekend consumed by my own stress and overwhelm. In the throes of it I didn’t want to feel better, because the only story I could focus on was that I had deadlines and time shortage and frustration. It was EXHAUSTING. So last night I worked through exactly how I got there and I chose to get myself out of it starting today. It didn’t happen because of this weekend. This had been brewing all month and I simply couldn’t see the final tidal wave until I was in it. Maybe your stress is born from a different pattern. It almost never feels optional. Stress feels like facts. And yet… there are ways to realign ourselves, to offload the chemical byproducts of stress, and to organize our lives toward more days that feel like flow, in a lower temperature of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. I am still in the deadline phase and still have a lot to do, but I am doing it with a different feeling because I made lowering my stress my first priority and the one I must control so I can think better, feel better, and DO better with everything else. I want to help us change the experience we have of stress, especially at this time of year. I’ve studied stress physiology for over a decade- how it impacts the systems in our bodies- either beneficially or problematically, and the science just keeps rolling in with more evidence of the negative impact of unmanaged chronic stress. There is no replacing you … what’s possible if you drop any resistance & lean into caring for yourself, because your wellbeing IS the prize? You are awesome. You are worth it. I have tools to help. #overwhelm#stressless

With the onset of the holiday season, stress levels are on the rise. If not properly managed, stress can result in serious physical and emotional illness. Don’t kid yourself into thinking you’re immune. Everyone is impacted. A very effective way to manage stress is to set clear boundaries. This involves learning to say no. For many individuals, being likable, helpful, and supportive, are qualities that are important. When we say yes it is often with these attributes in mind. Saying yes can be very rewarding , when we feel needed and appreciated. It can also be a source of stress if we are feeling overwhelmed and over scheduled. If you struggle with taking on more than you should, it’s imperative to say no. We often think, saying no means we’re a bad person. We’re not being helpful. We may even think we’re being selfish. Saying no is not being selfish. It’s saying that you’re putting yourself first, that you value your time. When you set healthy boundaries, not only are you taking care of you, but you’re better able to care for those most important to you. A simple, no thank you will suffice. If that leaves you feeling guilty, state that you already have plans. You don’t have to provide a lengthy answer. From personal experience, I’ve found that being fully transparent is most appreciated and readily understood. “I appreciate your invitation, but I’m already committed. If you think you’re lying, STOP! You’re committed to yourself. Consider this. By saying yes, you’re actually saying no to something else. What are you indirectly saying no to? Are there things you are unable to do because there is not available time in your schedule? Are you putting work first and saying no to family time? Are you saying yes to after work functions that are preventing you from having a much needed evening at home? Ultimately, the choice is yours. It’s not the other person’s. The more you practice saying no, the easier it will become. You’ve got this! #healthyboundaries #justsayno #CPQC #healthandwellness #stressmanagement
