FATHOMWERX is buzzing as we reflect on the past two weekends of hosting the prestigious FIRST Robotics Regional competition at our state-of-the-art lab at the Port of Hueneme. It was an electrifying experience witnessing the brightest young minds converge to tackle real-world challenges through robotics and technology. The atmosphere was charged with innovation and determination as high school students embarked on the final step of their journey to design, build, and program robots that could go head-to-head in the regional competition. The 2024 edition of the FIRST Robotics Competition brought into focus the critical importance of renewable energy solutions amidst the backdrop of a global energy crisis. With a theme of "CRESCENDO," students were challenged to explore the intersection of robotics and sustainability, igniting their passion for driving positive change in the world. From brainstorming sessions to late-night tinkering, each team comprising more than 35 students, alongside dedicated mentors including educators and industry professionals, epitomized the collaborative spirit essential for tackling complex issues. At the heart of the competition lay the essence of teamwork and ingenuity. Students immersed themselves in the intricacies of robot design, mastering the art of problem-solving and critical thinking. From devising strategies to executing precision maneuvers on the field, every aspect of the competition underscored the transformative power of STEM education. FATHOMWERX served as not just a venue but a beacon of inspiration, nurturing the next generation of innovators poised to shape the future of technology and sustainability. I time-traveled at IMTS - International Manufacturing Technology Show 2024, and let me tell you, the future isn't in the machines - it's in the minds shaping them! 🚀🧠 While industry bigwigs debate making manufacturing 'sexy' and economists crunch numbers on the skills gap, I witnessed the next generation rewriting the whole freaking playbook: • Wheeling High School kids aren't just coding - they're creating ABB robots that drop beats and DJ parties, fusing tech with culture in ways we've never imagined. • University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students aren't waiting for the future of transportation - they're building it from scratch, turning EV racecars from concepts to reality. • The NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration ARTemis team is showing kids that the moon is just a pit stop. They're cultivating a generation that sees Mars as the next frontier, not science fiction. But here's the real: The beating heart behind this innovation isn't silicon - it's the people nurturing these young minds. Massive respect to the SME Education Foundation team. Greg Jones, Catherine (Cat) Ross, and their crew aren't just producing the MOST IMPORTANT PART of IMTS - they're providing space and a platform for the architects of our industry's future. They understand that closing the skills gap isn't about filling jobs - it's about igniting passion, fostering creativity, and showing kids from all walks of life that they have a place in manufacturing. Watching these young innovators in action, guided by dedicated mentors, I realized: The future of manufacturing isn't in the latest gadget or the shiniest robot. It's in the spark in a kid's eye when they solve a problem. It's in the fist bump between students who just built something amazing. Last night was an incredible experience, starting with an insightful Uprise session and ending with a fantastic networking event at Guilford Hall Brewery! 🚀 The afternoon kicked off at UpSurge Baltimore’s office from 4-6 PM with an enlightening UpRise session on marketing and communication strategies. We had the privilege of hearing from marketing expert Joel Benge and Brad Hennessie, founder of NextStep Robotics, who shared valuable insights on how to elevate tech solutions and stand out in a crowded market. 🌟 Following that, we moved to Guilford Hall Brewery from 6-8 PM for the Bring Your Intern to Equitech Tuesday event. It was an amazing opportunity to network with industry professionals and connect with the vibrant Baltimore tech scene. A big shoutout to: Jose Leon: Building an innovative app designed to gather important information from patients before an MRI scan. The idea is not only practical but has the potential to enhance safety and efficiency in medical imaging. Himalaya Kadari: An impressive Master's student in Engineering Management at Johns Hopkins University and Co-founder at Cement On Wheels. Her experience in strategic consulting and product management is truly inspiring. Ben Bartolome: Co-founder and Co-CEO of Walkthrough, an app providing tailored and automated financial advice to first-generation wealth builders. His insights on the differences between startups and SMBs were invaluable, and I’m excited about the possibility of exploring startup banking for Brady UX as we scale. Edward M: Working on a fantastic app prototype, which aims to revolutionize language learning. The prototype looks great, and I’m eager to bring more UX expertise to his design through our DRAGON process. D. Patrick Leibensperger: An Apprentice Full-Stack Developer with a strong background in technology education. We connected on the idea of collaborating on projects that need backend support, and I’m excited about the potential of working together. Rolando Masís-Obando: A Neuroscientist and Filmmaker, currently a postdoc at The Johns Hopkins University, working on the intersection of neuro, AI, and XR. His creative projects and insights on the ethical future of XR are incredibly inspiring. The energy and ideas shared at the event were truly invigorating. It’s always exciting to connect with passionate individuals who are pushing the boundaries in tech. #1 Ideas This week im going to be solely working on an idea I want to pursue building at buildspace For the better part of this year, I've just been breaking my head trying to come up with a perfect idea, one that sounds tangible and solves a problem. And what did it lead to ? Nothing, tbh. The idea never came to life. I was so stuck trying to think something good that I didn't understand that "Ideas are Overrated, they are just a starting point" - Farza Majeed . But that changes now, instead of finding a great idea, I am going to forge one. The Problem? Being into Robotics, I have understood that it's a vast field. While starting out can be relatively simple, but being able to diversify your knowledge in the many streams it has to offer is very difficult. Not to mention no proper guidelines on where to start / what to do? The Idea? A platform to learn robotics and the several components within, while optimizing for learning by doing and keeping everything open sourced, so no one has to pay for it other( than their time and efforts ofc). If I can club all the learners into a community, then that would serve as a nice platform for both people looking to hire + people wanting to be hired. Let me know what do you think about this? Five university teams came together to tackle one of the UK’s most pressing challenges: the housing shortage. With just 24 hours, these students developed bold, sustainable solutions for rapid home construction, leveraging robotics, digital processing, and innovative design. The ideas generated here aren’t just theoretical; they will contribute to a larger review by Innovate UK, exploring sustainable design and material choices to combat climate change and address global housing needs. “Hackathons like this highlight how young minds can transform challenges into opportunities, driving innovation that has a tangible impact.” It’s a reminder that innovation, when paired with opportunity, can truly reshape our future. 🌍
