Los Angeles City voters approved the Healthy Streets L.A. ballot initiative this week. Measure HLA, seen as a referendum on the city's multimodal future. The final vote count is still pending, and could take weeks as California continues to count late mail-in ballots. However, NBC4 and the L.A. Times are reporting that the measure has effectively been approved. Proponents of the initiative say ballot measure would force city officials to make sure streets are repaved for buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. HLA requires that, during street repaving, the city must implement bus, bike and walk improvements in the city's Mobility Plan, which was approved in 2015 and 2016 but remains predominantly unimplemented. In the Mobility Plan, the city adopted a Vision Zero policy to eliminate traffic deaths by 2035 - but in recent years traffic deaths have risen to their highest levels in decades, generating impetus for HLA's passage.

🚨 Harborplace Redevelopment Halted: Is Baltimore Sacrificing Progress for Confusing Politics? 🚨 A judge just ruled the Baltimore City charter referendum on overhauling Harborplace unconstitutional, citing confusing language. The $500M redevelopment was poised to transform our iconic waterfront, but now it's in limbo. 🏙️ Is the real issue the referendum’s wording, or are there deeper forces at play? 🧐 While some argue public parkland should be preserved, others believe this project is essential for the revitalization of Baltimore’s economic future. Will this ruling protect our public spaces, or does it undermine progress? What are your thoughts? Should the city appeal or rethink the entire approach? #CRE #Baltimore #RealEstate #Harborplace #DevelopmentDebate #UrbanRevitalization

#GenovaBurns' Harrison Clewell, Esq. featured in recent NJ.com article, "Hoboken council plans to change wording on explanation of rent control referendum, but may get a fight" - "A major decision on rent control is being left up to Hoboken voters in November, and there is now a disagreement on the language that will appear on their ballots." "Harry Clewell, an attorney at Genova Burns LLC with expertise in elections, said that according to case law, said the same, that the governing body must approve the interpretive statement for a referendum at a public meeting." “As long as the language is put forth and voted through in a public meeting or in a public process, then it should be allowed to proceed and put on the ballot,” he said." "The #MSTA, which brought the referendum, does not agree and warned it would take legal action. If a decision is challenged, courts may bring the governing body and the challenging party together to revise the language, Clewell said." "The yes-or-no ballot question will ask voters whether the city’s rent control ordinance should be amended to allow landlords to raise rents as much as they want between tenants by contributing $2,500 per unit to the city’s #AffordableHousing Trust Fund."
