As you probably know, our state (North Carolina) went through something horrific with the recent hurricane, Helene. The ripple effect of this event will last much longer than the time it will take to rebuild.
Despite all the horror stories, there were many stories of good. Stories of kindness. As I was discussing this with a friend, she said, "Isn't it a shame how it takes a tragedy to bring out the best in people?"
Or does it?
I kept thinking about this long after our conversation was over. Did it take the tragedy to bring out the good, or did the tragedy just reveal the good that was already there? I think it's the latter.
Bad times don't force us to be good. We certainly see plenty of evidence of how bad people will use tragedy to do even more bad things. No, bad times don't force us to be good. They just give the good people an opportunity to step up and do something.
In our state we watched amazing people coming from all over the country - like the Amish community who made the long trip down to build houses, the people who donated helicopters and places to land them, the parade of neighbors with chainsaws to hack their way through the trees, small business owners who brought their construction equipment to build streets, the farmers who sent trucks of hay to feed the animals, the churches who dropped everything to come help. The evidence of humanity was in full display, and truly beyond measure.
So, no, tragedy does not bring out the best in people. It simply shines a light on the good that already exists. And that fills me with hope.
In these moments, when the worst of nature meets the best of humanity, we are reminded of our collective strength and compassion. Let us carry this reminder forward, not just in times of crisis but in our everyday interactions. May we rest in the belief that most people around us are good, generous, and willing to help. This belief isn't just comforting; it's a call to action. It encourages us to be the helpers, the givers, and the light-bringers in both good times and bad.
Let's choose to see the good—it's always there, sometimes just waiting for its moment to shine.
