Update on AAE-1 submarine cable Issue: To mitigate the impact, PTCL added additional bandwidth which has majorly resolved internet slowness issue. However, slowness might be experienced on Meta-related services (WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram) during peak hours. We expect complete resolution over the next few days. PTA and PTCL are working diligently to ensure the earliest possible resolution. #PTCL

Better early warning systems are one factor in the decrease in fatalities and injuries during hazardous events. This funding can improve systems in communities around the U.S., especially in rural areas.
$40M federal funding is now available for Next Generation Warning System grants. These funds help make public TV/radio stations, especially those covering rural/underserved communities, build local capacity to withstand tomorrow’s hazards by upgrading to the latest broadcast technology standards for emergency alerts.

Capacity Crunch - Intercontinental Cables: Peace, SMW4, SMW5, AAE1, SWM6. Well, Peace cable proclaimed yesterday that it was live and this morning one major Chinese carrier told me that their capacity is already gone! Wow, that was quick! In addition, there does not appear to be much excess capacity on SWM5 and AAE1. And the SWM4 decommissioning is likely to be postponed due to this never-ending capacity crunch on the European/Asian routes. To add salt to the open wound, SMW6 is most likely RFS late next year or early 2026. I am happy focusing on Equiano and 2Africa because at least they have plentiful capacity to sell and it is more my style, Wild West Shoot-Outs, than staid suit and tie consortium salesmen on big salaries and small commissions pricing out requests and taking three weeks to do so. That's the news from bandwidth trenches. 🙂 #subseacables #internetinfrastructure #capacity #shortage #intercontinental

RDOF finally contributes to Broadband! No I am not saying the RDOF was a good plan or even a well executed program, but due to the numerous failures by the 'Awardees' it has forced the FCC to redefine what Broadband is - from a speed perspective. This is good for the industry and the carriers. So for the BEAD Last Mile it is now going to be measured at 100/20 for the funds award. While this is still not in alignment with the true needs of the population, it is finally gotten away from the really poor broadband speed definition. So what does this mean, well first BEAD is still going to allow wireless - not good. But it is indeed forcing the higher speeds which forces elimination of the substandard bandwidth product offerings. Eventually the FCC has to get committed to the new 'norm' within the population of symmetrical bandwidth offerings. But once the BEAD monies are improperly released (yes I have no faith in it being much better then RDOF) but at least it justifies the Rural ILECs to go to RUS Bank and get funds for upgrading their copper networks. So that is a win for the Rural Residents.

31OCT24 • STA filed with #FCC to continue operation of NorthStar 1999 cable NorthStar License Corporation (“Northstar” or “Licensee”) just filed a Special Temporary Authority (“STA”) to authorize the continued operation of the Northstar Cable Systems in Alaska pending the filing and processing of an appropriate application to renew them. The submarine cable systems at issue are purely domestic with all landing points within Alaska and Oregon and have been providing service to U.S. residents for decades. The initial cable landing license for the Northstar system was granted by the Commission on June 6, 1995, uder file number (LIC-19940617-00002) An extension of the system was licensed by the Commission on November 5, 1996 under file number (SCL-LIC-19960308-0001) The licenses expire 25 years after the date on which the cable was placed into service. Although the in-service date was not identified in FCC records, Licensee’s estimate was October 1, 1999 (Note: Since the original 1995 #FCC filing, Northstar ownership changed a few times, currently owned/operated by Alaska Communications) TeleGeography Federal Communications Commission
