In 2005-2006, during my senior year of high school, I participated in a work-study program that profoundly shaped who I am today—though I didn’t realize it at the time. With only two classes left to graduate, I joined a nursing work-study program at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. What began as clinical training quickly turned into something far more meaningful. My time shifted to spending hours with injured service members in transition from combat zones, many just a few years older than I was. Their injuries came from different circumstances—combat, accidents, and everything in between. But what struck me most wasn’t their physical wounds; it was their stories, their resilience, and the human connection we shared. We played games, exchanged conversations, and they opened up about their lives back home—their dreams, their struggles, and the people they loved. At 17, I didn’t fully understand how deeply those moments would shape my life. But looking back now, I see how their courage, vulnerability, and trust taught me the true meaning of care. It wasn’t just about healthcare; it was about presence, empathy, and creating a sense of hope for others in dark moments. Those experiences expanded a lit fire in me to dedicate my life to serving my community and building connections that matter. What began as a simple work-study program turned into a defining chapter of my life—one I carry with me every single day. ❤️ • #passiondrivespurpose #connectionovercontent #reflection #journey #community #landstuhl #marines #soldiers #airmen #sailors #lifeofservice

What do you call two Rigloos ? Riglai became the phrase of choice on a wet Prolonged Field Care course in the mountains of Snowdonia last week. Here, a Faculty member has set up, on a mountain, one of the facilities the delegates use during the 12 hour long night phase … play with the volume on. It’s a bit wet … Excellent kit, used time after time on our courses in bad weather. Highly recommended. One of the many things we love about the Rigloo is the thorough testing and dedication to fit for purpose solutions, through several field ready prototypes. The Defender models are portable, rapidly deployable and do what they say on the can. It’s the commitment to testing and long standing field tests that make a huge difference. Years ago, my family couldn’t afford Christmas. Then, a knock at the door changed everything — nurses from my daughter’s care team brought gifts for my kids. That moment stuck with me forever. This season, be someone’s knock on the door. Give without expecting anything back. You might just change a life — I know it changed mine. The start of day 28 after my spinal surgery was organising my office having been moved last night to be transferred to RD&E Exeter. Now that all seems up in the air, so I'm awaiting a decision, at least I can carry on working. So, back to work and major new news is the introduction of a new standard for permanent anchors for fall arrest and personnel attachment. A new standard, EN 17235:2024 'Permanent anchor devices and safety hooks' has been approved for publication, providing the means to obtain CE marking for these important components of a fall arrest system. Permanently installed anchor devices have been declassified as PPE now for a significant time, since the harmonisation of the standard EN 795: 2012 was removed for anchor types A, C and D. This has stopped Notified Bodies being able to issue certification on these products and has ultimately reduced independent quality checks on products within the industry. These types of anchor are now covered by the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) 305/2011. Once EN 17235 is published, and following successful harmonisation to the CPR, it will become a legal requirement to obtain certification before permanently installed anchor devices can be placed on the market in Europe. A proposed grace period of 36 months will enable manufacturers to transition and meet these new requirements. Compliance with this standard and regulation will involve an initial audit, sample selection, initial type testing, certification, first batch testing, and annual ongoing assessment. Therefore, the requirements placed upon manufacturers of these products have increased substantially. Well it's the start of day 28 after the final op and I was moved last night to be ready for a transfer to Exeter RD&E today, but now no one seems sure if it's happening. I am though getting as per usual increase in sensation and movement. The room change doesn't make much difference as far as being able to work as I still have WiFi but there's now no window and no phone signal so hopefully the transfer will happen at some point today. The fact I now have some feeling on the sole of my right foot as well means that I'm now ready to start standing up, probably power assisted to start off with. That doesn't matter it's the next step to walking again and that feels great, but unfortunately it all hinges on if I a get a physio session today. I'm supposed to have one at least every 2 days, but it usually ends up being 4 to 5 days and the stuff I need to progress ever further I'm not allowed to use without supervision, so it's a long up hill battle. If my transfer happens then hopefully I'll be in the therapy unit pretty quickly afterwards and that will mean far more Physio, so fingers crossed. (Image: Statewide Exercise/Vigilant Guard Training) Immersive moulage plays a pivotal role in creating an environment that mirrors the complexities and uncertainties inherent in real-life crises. By replicating symptoms, wounds, and patient presentations, simulations become interconnected experiences that challenge responders and clinical sites to apply their knowledge in dynamic and evolving scenarios. 'It is rewarding and stimulating work... I learn so much from my clients'. This is just a snapshot of what we heard from our learners about their enjoyment in working with older adults. Tomorrow, PGLO is excited to kick-off our 7th Cohort of the Provincial Common Orientation to the Care of Older Adults. This program is a 11-week workforce training series for health and social care professionals, where we come together once weekly for 90 minutes to learn how to apply the latest evidence to practice. We have 160 learners from across the province from all practice settings and over 10+ different disciplines who are passionate about working with older adults. When we learn together (across disciplines and setting) we take the first step towards breaking down siloed care! Looking forward to providing more great insights from our learners over the next three months.

Do-it-yourself (DIY) is popular, but also has its dangers. Think about your profession. It takes at least a decade or more to gain foundational knowledge and experience. Would you hire someone who studied your profession part time? Someone who didn’t have decades of experience? A prime example: Would you let a part-time surgeon with minimal experience operate on your mother? So what about retirement? https://buff.ly/4c32nKX

Summer vacation is ending, and it is time to get ready for the next school year. As you put together your back-to-school checklist, make sure you include your child’s annual physical. These appointments are important for your child’s development and are often required by schools before the year starts up. Jennifer Berger-Vernace, DO discusses the importance of back-to-school physical in our newest blog post. #PeakVistaCommunityHealthCenters #PVCHC #Colorado #HealthCenter #FQHC
