Thanksgiving Day is a time for family gatherings, reflection, and gratitude, celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada, though in different ways. In the United States, Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November. It commemorates the Pilgrims' 1621 harvest feast with the Wampanoag people in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Over time, it has evolved into a national holiday focused on giving thanks for the harvest and blessings of the past year. The day is marked by family reunions, large feasts, and various traditions. Traditions on Thanksgiving Day (U.S.): 1. Feasts: The Thanksgiving meal often includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, and more. It is a time for family to come together and share a large meal. 2. Parades: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City is famous for its giant character balloons, floats, and performances. It’s a major tradition for many who tune in on TV. 3.Football: Many people watch or play football on Thanksgiving. The NFL hosts special games on the day, and football is often a big part of the celebration. 4. Volunteering and Giving: Many people use Thanksgiving to give back to the community, whether by volunteering at food banks or hosting charity dinners. 5. Black Friday: The day after Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday shopping season with Black Friday sales, a tradition for bargain hunters. #thanksgiving #logistics #export #import

FIND had 90 volunteers at East Spring Branch Food Pantry this morning. This will lead to 1,100 families having Thanksgiving meals they may not have had otherwise. Proverbs 28:27 - “Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes will suffer long. In feeding the hungry, we find grace. A small act of kindness can light the darkest place.” Feeding those in need isn’t just about giving food - it’s about restoring dignity, offering hope, and acknowledging the humanity we share. When we feed the hungry, we aren’t just providing nourishment; we’re building a bridge between hearts. It’s an investment in a more compassionate world, where no one is left behind. Let’s remember that every meal shared is a step toward a world where kindness outweighs indifference. We all have the power to make a difference, one plate at a time. What you have done to the least of these, you have done unto Me! www.FINDdiscipleship.org

🍂 What Are We Celebrating on Thanksgiving? 🦃 Did you know the first Thanksgiving dinner was also a celebration of the free market economy? It marked a turning point for the Pilgrims as they moved away from the idea of collective property and embraced the principles of private ownership. 💼🌾 In 1620, the Plymouth Colony initially operated under a system of shared property, believing it would lead to efficiency and prosperity. But instead, it led to chaos, disease, starvation, and near extinction for the settlers. ❌🥀 Governor William Bradford noted that the collective system “was found to breed much confusion and discontent.” So, he implemented clear lines of private ownership. The result? 🌽✨ A plentiful harvest and the first Thanksgiving feast—a true celebration of abundance! 🥧🍗 As Robert Sirico explains, Thanksgiving reminds us to thank God “who commanded us to till and keep the land and forbade us from taking what belongs to others.” 🙏🌍 It’s a powerful moment to reflect on the blessings of hard work, private property, and the prosperity made possible by free markets. 💪💡 This Thanksgiving, let’s give thanks for these enduring principles—and for all the gifts in our lives. What are you thankful for this year? Drop it in the comments! ⬇️💬 #Thanksgiving #FreeMarket #Gratitude #PrivateProperty #Economics 🍁

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM
