Last week's Life Sciences Update hosted by Place North West highlighted the UK’s growing competitiveness in the global life sciences market. From a scientific excellence standpoint, the UK remains a global leader, with world-class capabilities that continue to attract investment. Public sector initiatives, alongside a healthy funding environment, are crucial drivers of growth. Notably, the UK life sciences sector saw venture capital funding surge in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The UK's investment landscape is second only to the US, further positioning it as a key player globally. The business environment is evolving, with a healthy pipeline of lab space developments over the remainder of the decade. Demand for space is expected to rise in 2025, spurred on by increased funding and growing rental rates in major markets. Regional clusters are becoming increasingly vital. The North West, for example, stands out as one of the most exciting emerging markets outside the "Golden Triangle" (London, Oxford, Cambridge). The collaboration between cities like Liverpool and Manchester, with their focus on precision medicine, AI, and digital health, is a perfect example of how local ecosystems are developing tailored identities aligned with future trends. Placemaking and skill retention are essential for maintaining momentum. Universities must work closely with industry to ensure talent stays in the region post-graduation. Creating a cohesive strategy for business development and focusing on core capabilities are key to attracting continued investment and fostering sustainable growth. The UK’s life sciences sector is poised for growth, but continued investment and strategic focus are essential to maintaining its competitive edge. #lifesciences #commercialrealestate #goldentriangle #northwestlifescienceshub

A new report has just been released that shows Leeds is one of the foremost locations for health and care research and innovation in the UK. The report, which was commissioned by the Leeds Academic Health Partnership (LAHP) and compiled by Perspective Economics, provides an up-to-date analysis of the Leeds health and care research and innovation ecosystem. It uses key UK cities, including Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle Upon Tyne, to create a benchmark, and evidence shows that in comparison to these cities, Leeds: - Has the highest number of health and care related patents applied for or granted (n~200) - Enrols the highest proportion of undergraduate students in bioscience courses - Has one of the highest concentrations of health tech employees – equivalent to around two in every 100 working age people - Has the largest proportion of high-growth health tech companies securing equity investment What’s more, when compared to international benchmark cities, including Boston, Dublin, Zurich, Basel, Eindhoven, Oulu, Mainz and Bergen, Leeds accounts for 14% of investment raising companies, ranking it third behind Dublin and Zurich. Beauhurst's ‘High-growth Cambridgeshire’ report showcases the subsectors in which high-growth companies operate and provides a snapshot of equity investment trends, as well as public grant activity over the last decade. There’s no doubt that Cambridge continues to be one of the world’s leading innovation systems, with 1,756 equity deals having led to £8.03b of equity secured between 2013 to 2022. During that time, academic spinouts secured 451 equity deals worth £2.69b in funding. Moreover, there was an increase in both the number and total value of public grants made to Cambridgeshire tech companies – with 1,345 grants secured leading to £352m funding received. It’s also no surprise that the majority of high-growth tech companies are working on Artificial Intelligence with the rest developing technologies associated with Genomics, Big data, Precision medicine, Fintech, eHealth, etc. Jason Mellad, Start Codon CEO and Co-Founder, said: “With Cambridge being home to two outstanding universities – The University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University – it perhaps shouldn’t surprise us that Cambridgeshire continues to flourish. Attracting students from around the world to study in our small city increases the breadth of experience and knowledge in the ecosystem year on year. To continue supporting innovation and sustainable growth, while also looking to the positive global impact this can bring about, we need to keep working together across the ecosystem to discover, nurture and advance ground-breaking technology and solutions.” Find the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ek-Fr4AH #Cambridge #Innovation #tech #AI #Investment
