Every successful researcher started with the right mentor Having a mentor means having someone to guide and support you through your research journey. But how do you find the right one? Here are 3 simple ways to connect with a mentor: 1. Attend conferences - Conferences are events where experts gather to talk about new research ideas. When you attend, you can learn from professionals, ask questions, and even introduce yourself to potential mentors. For example, NIMR hosted the ICHAIR conference last year, bringing together top researchers and experts to share insights and connect with aspiring professionals. These events are a great way to meet people who can help you grow. 2. Join professional groups - There are many organizations made up of people who do similar work. When you join these groups, you get access to valuable advice, training, and opportunities to meet mentors who can guide you in the right direction. These groups help you stay updated and connected within your field. 3. Network with others - Sometimes, the best way to find a mentor is by talking to people around you for example friends, colleagues, or classmates. They might know someone who can guide you or share useful experiences that can help you in your research journey. Building connections can open doors to new opportunities. Networking in Academia: Just as Crucial as in Any Other Field When we think of networking, academia might not always be the first thing that comes to mind. We often picture it in the corporate world, with business cards and elevator pitches. But in reality, networking in academia is just as important—if not more so! Throughout my journey, from pursuing a PhD in Germany to completing a postdoc at Princeton University, I realized that building professional relationships was key to advancing my career and research. Here’s why: 🔹 Collaboration Drives Innovation Academia thrives on collaboration. Networking opens the door to joint projects, cross-disciplinary research, and partnerships that can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. Through collaboration, I had the chance to spend 4 months of my PhD as a visiting researcher in the UK. Science, after all, is rarely a solo effort. 🔹 Mentorship and Guidance Having the right mentor can transform your career. Networking helps you connect with experienced academics who can guide you through the complex landscape of research, publications, and grant applications. 🔹 Opportunities Don’t Always Come From Applications Many academic positions, grants, and conference invitations arise from who you know, not just what you know. Building relationships with peers and senior academics can put you on the radar for opportunities that might not be widely advertised. 🔹 The Power of Conferences Attending conferences and seminars isn’t just about presenting your work—it’s about connecting with people in your field. Swiss Chronicles #3 It does not matter how awesome you are (at the place you're in). If you're in a new place / situation / environment, you might still feel like a 1st grader 🤷 And that's OK. I thought that after 10+ years of managerial experience, awards and overall international globe-trotting, presenting my work (pretty much anywhere) would be easy 🔊 And yet, last week at Idiap Research Institute, I had a fantastic opportunity to be proven wrong. How exactly do you explain what you do to the audience which finds spiking networks (google it) and human-robot interactions trivial? Well, in my case, I tried to showcase what we can achieve by collaborating (I might not know what it is, but that does not stop me from selling it) and learning from others 🚀 P.S. Thanks to Phil Garner (in the photo), who took an hour to explain to me what spiking nets are in detail (so I did not need to google it). How to define #leadership? What does #career mean? Why are we doing what we're doing? These are only a few areas we were discussing during the last day of the German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO) #LeadershipAcademy. To mention is that the participants were mainly #researchers in the Postdoc and Group leader phase - probably the time where so many questions and uncertainty arise, while expectations in various dimensions increase. My three take aways: ☆ No matter if #academia, #industry or any other sector, it's about the #people we're surrounded by and our choice of interaction. ☆ There's no one right way and we don't need to be the expert for everything, but we need to know ourselves to make #decisions, which align with our #values and #needs. ☆ Sharing your stories and asking for #help may not feel easy at first, but it may lead to learnings and #connections which last.
