Hypertension continues to be a major burden on health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, with challenges at the health systems level significantly impairing patient blood pressure outcomes. Understanding these gaps is crucial for improving the readiness of appropriate bodies to manage the growing burden of hypertension. This study, explores the barriers and opportunities for better hypertension management. It reveals the critical barriers to service delivery and challenges that providers face in offering care. To improve hypertension control, health facilities should leverage innovations in screening, task-shifting strategies, and patient self-management. Also, policies that equip healthcare systems with the necessary resources for hypertension management across countries could lead to significant improvements in patient outcomes. Novel estimates of county-level hypertension prevalence and control by Xingran Weng, Siran He and Sandra L. Jackson at the CDC Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and colleagues. Congratulations to the team for this innovative analysis of EHR data for over 7 million patients in the IQVIA AEMR-US data system. The study released granular and timely results giving policymakers, public health practitioners, and clinicians a first look at county-level hypertension control. By leveraging EHR data, this work may be used to tailor programmatic efforts; allocate resources; and inform hypertension prevention, screening, and control efforts among high-need communities. These efforts may then help to reduce hypertension burden, improve hypertension control, and subsequently improve cardiovascular health for US adults. Future hypertension surveillance could leverage these timely EHR data to track temporal trends and to continue identifying areas with a high disease burden. #IQVIA #RealWorldEvidence #RealWordData
