The latest MedCity News article sheds light on an issue that impacts everyone in healthcare --the looming mass exodus of nurses. Solving this problem demands innovative solutions to retain our nursing workforce. One approach I've seen addressing this issue is the implementation of nurse advice lines and the empowerment of non-clinical staff with clinically validated triage tools to alleviate nurses' workloads. This allows nurses to focus on complex care and meaningful patient interactions, enhancing job satisfaction and reducing burnout. By embracing these technologies and reshaping roles, we can create a more sustainable working environment that benefits both nurses and patients to keep our nurses from leaving healthcare. 🏥 #NurseAdviceLines #TriageTools #HealthcareTech https://lnkd.in/gqXvpvJ6

A January 2023 survey by AMN Healthcare revealed startling concerns within the nursing profession, with 85% of hospital nurses contemplating quitting within a year due to decreased satisfaction and increased emotional strain. Fast forward 14 months, the predicted mass exodus has not occurred, largely thanks to health systems doubling down on retention efforts. However, the future remains uncertain, as there have also been double-digit decreases across satisfaction scores and double-digit increases in emotional drain. In a separate survey, 72% of nurse leaders indicated that they are burnt out. Needless to say, these numbers are a cause for concern, and healthcare organizations are still looking for ways to stave off an exacerbated nursing shortage. As one RN put it, "The thought that we would just get back to [pre-pandemic] business as usual, whether as a nurse or as a nurse employer … there's no back to business as usual. The call to action was really for every client or healthcare system that utilizes nurses: What are you going to do differently?" With healthcare looking for ways to address these staffing issues, many are turning toward innovative solutions like virtual nursing. This technology has shown to not only optimize teams but also improve the well-being and job satisfaction of staff members. As the nursing shortage is only expected to worsen over the next decade, it’s important that leaders across healthcare find the virtual nursing solution that best helps their teams continue to thrive.
