On my way to the Innovate UK Business Connect #neurotechnology conference yesterday (thanks Amy Romaniuk for organising), I finally got around to reading the "Towards a UK Neurotechnology Strategy" report from 2020 (https://lnkd.in/eFNQpeFB). While I now think that I'm a little late to the Neurotech party, what an amazing party it's becoming! From some of the report recommendations becoming a reality, such as the recent opening of MAISI to enhance the UK's implant manufacturing capability, to the great #technologyinnovation happening across universities in the UK and spin-out companies such as MintNeuro, Opto Biosystems, BIOS Health Ltd, Neuranics, and MindSpire (to name only a few). We then add in the community networks such as NeuroTechX, Neuromod+ Network, CPNN, and CloseNIT alongside a big chunk of government funding from the newly set up Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA), and the party is really hotting up. I'm certainly excited to see what we can do in the UK to push the boundaries of the possible in neural interfacing. 🔍 Meet the Residents Across Our SI Parks! 🔎 🧠 Bottneuro AG, a cutting-edge medtech startup founded in 2021, is making significant strides in improving the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. Based at Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area on its Novartis Campus, the spin-off from the Department of Biomedical Engineering | University of Basel focuses on non-invasive treatments for Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders. Electrical stimulation of specific brain regions is a promising treatment for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's. Since everyone's brain is unique, stimulation caps need to be custom-made for each patient. Researchers at Bottneuro and ETH Zürich have taken on this challenge, producing a prototype to showcase how Bottneuro’s process can be fully digitalized—from designing the helmet shape and positioning the electrodes to the 3D-printing process for fabrication. ETH Professor Mirko Meboldt assists Swiss SMEs in finding the right technology to maintain their competitive edge. “Companies often come to us because they want to stay competitive but aren’t sure if they could benefit from new technologies like artificial intelligence,” says Professor Meboldt. Great news in Alzheimer's research! AC Immune PET tracer, just received FDA Fast Track Designation. This tracer, designed to detect Tau protein accumulation in Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, could help speed up diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes. Currently in Phase 3 trials, PI-2620 is seen as a significant tool for early and accurate diagnosis, key to tackling Alzheimer’s before irreversible damage sets in. I'm currently collaborating with several innovative startups in the PET/CT space, focusing on brain imaging advancements. The Global Alzheimer's Platform Foundation is a US patient-centric institution, partnering with  leading philanthropic organizations like Gates Ventures or industry partners such as Roche, to Janssen Inc. or Eli Lilly and Company to accelerate the delivery of innovative therapies for neurological disorders. As part of the study, iLoF will be deploying iLoF’s breakthrough Optomics® platform, its AI-powered technology that combines photonics and multimodal data analysis, providing rapid, non-invasive, and cost-effective screening.
