The big holiday has now come to an end and all New Zealanders are back to work that is natural and normal to find challenging return to work. Mental Health Foundation CE Shaun Robinson says that new year should be taken as an opportunity to work actively ensuring coming to work is an enjoyable and supportive experience for all. The Foundation has a free "Five Ways to Wellbeing" toolkit resource which helps make it easier for employees to return to work, and for employees to create better work environments. The five steps are: connect, give, take notice, be active and keep learning. It is common to feel low getting back to work after holidays but it is uncommon if that continues. This news story annoys me so much!😡 Since the news broke with one of the largest EAP provider accused of failings to their customers I have been appalled at how some of the most vulnerable people in society have been treated... The employee assistance programme (EAP) Health Assured is under scrutiny due to allegations of mishandled calls and to be honest the allegations are shocking and dangerous because every employee deserves to receive quality mental health support and the fact that the most vulnerable people have been impacted by this is distressing. Thankfully, many organisations are now prioritising the health and wellbeing of their staff. I think it was on the radar of many, but the introduction of the “Managing the Risk of Psychosocial Hazards at Work” Code of Conduct, which was released in QLD in 2022, has put it front, line and centre. We have certainly noticed an increased interest in corporate health and wellbeing programs, as well as consulting and research-related activities, that help drive this agenda forward. Specifically, the interest appears to lie in the following areas: · Engaging our corporate educators and researchers to support organisations in identifying risks and implementing strategies; . Professional development and awareness programs aimed at helping organisations to recognise the signs of mental health and provide appropriate support in response to this. Additionally, in helping to foster a culture that helps promote the importance of health and wellbeing in the workplace; · Shaping policies and processes that ensure that health and wellbeing is part of the organisation’s governance framework. Here at QUT, we have experts who live and breathe this type of work. Those who are across best practice and who are dedicated to making a difference in this vital area.
