🎤 Yesterday I had the great pleasure of discussing about the "I love you, me neither 💘 " relationship between urban public transport and cycling at Velo-city conference #VC24. 👉 Even if of course we are obvious allies to reshape our cities, in practice we can sometimes have disagreements, for example about the sharing of space (when parking remains a "holy cow", it's really difficult to develop perfect bike AND PT infrastructure together). 👉 In the background, there can be feelings of "competition", for users, or public budgets. This is as always a cultural transition: think in the plural, accept that far - from the big dream of a massive modal shift from car-users - we mainly have "communicating vessels" between our existing users. And remember: choice gives satisfaction, and neither public transport nor cycling can offer a solution to everything. That's why 1+1 can be 3 😎 👉 One concern brings us together in the 2 communities: SAFETY ❗. It was an opportunity for me to highlight the great work done these last 2 years by my colleagues at STIB-MIVB (in particular Amal Kammachi, Gaëtan Deckers Laurent Polomé and his team), together with the local cycling associations Pro Velo Belgium GRACQ Fietsersbond. Nothing better than "live my life" to better understand each other!
