Today is International Literacy Day. Almost 73% of the Indian Population is Literate (as per the 2011 census) . The current year figures would obviously be more. The Government released some figures in 2023 that showed the Urban / Rural Literacy rates as 84.11 % and 67.77% respectively. Now lets look another statistic - the penetration of smartphones - According to the Annual Survey for Education Report (ASER) , 2023 , the penetration of smartphones in Rural Indian in terms of number of household was 74.8 percent. That means roughly 3 out of 4 households in Rural India have smartphones and approximately 7 out of 10 people in Rural India are literate . I am not going into the deeper dicing but there is more than 15% gender gap in literacy rates. But lets keep that aside for now and focus on literacy. Literacy is not just about reading - it is about meaningfully interacting with society by reading , writing , speaking and listening. It actually is a powerful tool that liberates and empowers. And as technology proliferates and breaks down barriers , the need for literacy increases so that we can meaningfully interact with society instead of becoming passive consumers of digital media. The approach highlighted in this article from WETA on Recording Observations: Journals and Field Notes is not unfamiliar to me. I remember taking my science class outside to record and write their observations. They had fun being outside using clipboards to document their research.
