On this last day of Cancer Prevention Awareness Month we want to share: Cancer Screenings by Age Cervical cancer - Pap smear every 3 years beginning at age 25. Colon cancer - Colonoscopy (or Cologuard) beginning at age 45. Breast cancer - Mammogram annually beginning at age 45 (or 40 with certain risk factors). Prostate cancer - PSA levels should be checked at age 45 (or 40 with certain risk factors). Lung cancer - A “low-dose” CT scan is recommended for smokers beginning at age 50. Gleason score — This is a number indicating the grading of prostate cancer cells .it is helpful to a practitioner to decide on course of medical treatment. It is done after examining the biopsy tissue under a microscope. The cancer cells are examined and assigned grades from 1 to 5 as per number of abnormal cancer cells in the tissue.The two common grades are added to give a score say 3/3. Which means three are normal cells and three are abnormal ones. This Gleason score of 3/3 is the lowest score where the cancer is least aggressive at present and has to be actively monitored with regular psa and visits to the urologist. Gleason score — of 7 shows the cancer is again likely to grow slowly but needs constant monitoring. Gleason score -8 or more. Shows the cancer cells are likely to be more aggressive and need to be immediately treated. #prostatecancer #prostatehealth #menshealth

🔬 Taking a Closer Look at Dysplasia 🔍 Based on our current understanding of oral cancer, we believe that cancer often has a precancerous stage. In the oral cavity, white lesions, such as leukoplakia, and red lesions, such as erythroplakia, can be classified as precancerous lesions. I have been pondering the recent headlines about NHS not meeting key targets for #cancer healthcare, in particular the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) of 75% patients to be diagnosed within 28 days of urgent referral (never met since set up in 2021, see below from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Our #VivoSight Dx scanner is widely used in Germany for diagnosis of #basalcellcarcinoma (BCC), the commonest, but less serious, form of skin cancer. I think introducing VivoSight into NHS would benefit ALL UK cancer patients. Here’s why: nearly all other cancers require a biopsy for diagnosis. A sample of tissue has to be taken and analysed in NHS histopathology labs. I was told by a UK dermatologist at a leading hospital that there is always a backlog of biopsy samples to be analysed. Now, #BCC is extremely common and in the UK results in huge numbers of skin biopsies and these clog up the labs and contribute to delays for ALL cancer diagnoses. I am hoping that we can work with the NHS to introduce VivoSight into the system for fast rule-in #diagnosis of BCC cutting the need for confirmatory biopsies of this common type of #skincancer (as it is in Germany) and so reducing the pressure on the NHS labs so they can focus on the diagnosis of other cancers and get those waiting times down!
