Am I better than other people? Yes (but with a massive caveat 😂). I got an astronomical level of engagement on a post this week. It also deeply triggered some people. One of the triggers was that I said, as a 20 year old, being a firefighter was top of the food chain when all my mates were bricklayers and electricians. One guy said I was belittling those professions. Let me be clear, I have never seen myself as better than anyone else. Everyone has something amazing they can share and many low paid jobs have enormous value to society and the people they impact. Take carers in an old people's home as an example. Did I see myself as better than my mates for becoming a firefighter? No. But did they hold me in high esteem for being a firefighter? Yes and I loved that. Plus, only 2.5% of people who applied to join the Fire Service got in. Applying made me realise that life is a competition. The first thing I did (before applying) was speak to two serving firefighters and take copious notes. I then knocked on the door of Halifax Fire Station and asked if I could look around. All this gave me an edge over loads of my mates who also wanted to become a firefighter. They simply sent off the application form and hoped for the best. I didn't get in because I was a better candidate than them; I got in because I was better informed and worked harder. Recently, I have prepped a CEO who has pitched for millions of pounds and another person getting interviewed to become CEO of an insurance company. Both of them were up against other people. To be successful, they had to be 'better' than their competition. Not better human beings but have a better proposition, better understanding of the role and better qualities that suited the investors and Board. These are not natural gifts given to the chosen few. These are things we worked very hard on so they could stand out from the crowd and be better. I have had astonishing success where I showed myself to be better. A Guinness memory record, 500 media appearances including going on Oprah, Sunday Times #1 bestselling book and becoming a global speaker are a few areas where I beat others and smashed it out of the park. But for balance, my extreme highs have been matched by extreme lows. My ability to outwork others and drill deep has produced wonderful memories but that tunnel vision has also created some truly awful self inflicted pain. Am I better than other people? Broadly speaking, yes in terms of motivation, work ethic, drive and ambition. But it's a double edged sword because no matter how bright the day is, night will surely follow. SIDE NOTE: In the last year, after buying a house, I have used roofers, an electrician, plumber, handy man, tree surgeons and some guys to build a fence. A fully trained firefighter earns an average of £88 a day in the UK. The least I have paid for the trades people was £200 a day, the most £350 per day. Esteem is great but it doesn't pay the bills.
