As a new business owner, I've learned the importance of taking things slow and steady. Rushing and trying to do too much often leads to nowhere fast. Spending the last 48 hours in London made me realize that 5 miles can take 50 minutes, and that's perfectly fine. It's a valuable time to relax, handle admin tasks, and breathe. One thing I'm not afraid to do is ask for help and advice. As a business owner, you don't need or want to be surrounded by people who are constantly "yes people". It's good for your ego, but NOT for your success!! Your company becomes an echo chamber: people only tell you what you want to hear. Suddenly there are no checks and balances. You lose money, and quality people—the smart ones who will question you—leave because their voices aren’t valued. Always seek out a circle that are experts at the fields they're in. Their knowledge and ability to show you what you're doing wrong and find more productive ways of improving and growing is what will make sure your business succeeds!! Giving first often leads to receiving more later. Sometimes, offering free advice makes someone come back for your service. Other times, helping a client without charging for that extra 30 minutes builds a stronger relationship and leads to long-term work. When people see that you’re invested in the relationship, they’re more likely to invest in it too. A few years ago, I spoke with a fellow service-based business owner who wanted to charge clients for the time he spent sending them quotes. I don’t judge him—everyone can run their business as they see fit. But if I were deciding whether to work with him, I probably wouldn’t choose him. Nobody has to work with you. It’s always a choice.
