Remembering Pearl Harbor: Honoring Lives and Their Stories Today, we reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those who lived through the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This devastating event changed the course of history and shaped the lives of an entire generation. The attack destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. Tragically, 2,403 Americans were killed, and 1,178 others were wounded. This unprovoked assault was a catalyst for the United States to join World War II. Just days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, bringing the nation into a global conflict that would define a generation. For those who were there, the memories are vivid: the shock, the fear, and the resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. These firsthand accounts are more than history—they are living reminders of courage and humanity. If you’re lucky enough to know someone who lived through that time, take a moment today to listen. Ask them what they remember, how they felt, and how life changed for them. Record their stories. Write them down. These personal narratives are treasures that preserve the lessons of our past for future generations. Let's not just remember the attack but also the incredible resolve that followed. (Written on January 11, 2014) Neither narrow-minded ultra-nationalism nor extremely globalized border-free one-world government is considered to be an ideal form of the future world. It is significant for a person in each nation to maintain a global perspective and interact with many from different culture. However, each nation needs to maintain its independent national identity without being inclined to exclusive ultra-nationalism. No matter how international cross-cultural interaction is significant for the globalization and internationalization of each nation, it is a dangerous idea for one to expect the rise of one-world government beyond the national boundary, because it might lead to the rise of autocratic dictator who controls the entire world and oppress those who oppose his or her dictatorship through military forces under his or her authority. For Christians, it associates them with the rise of the anti-Christ and his great tribulation in the end of the history. Therefore, it is significant for each nation to maintain her solid national identity without becoming close-minded ultra-nationalism.
