If you’re familiar with water practices in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, you’re probably aware that water reuse has been a priority in these states. A big focus of these efforts right now is to support reuse through direct and indirect potable water systems. Indirect potable water reuse has been around for some time and is the more common of the two. This is when wastewater is treated to an advanced level and then pumped back out into a lake, reservoir, groundwater recharge system or some other body of water in the environment. From there, it filters into the environment and then back into the drinking water treatment plant. But some of the emerging practices we’re seeing in drinking water right now are in direct potable reuse, which involves treating wastewater to an advanced level and distributing it directly into a water treatment plant, without first going through a buffer in the environment. In Texas and California specifically, there are projects progressing pretty aggressively right now, and California has set up and funded projects in both San Diego and in Los Angeles. California has been the most prescriptive in both research and rulemaking, although there are operating systems in Texas and administrative procedures in place with an active project in El Paso. But overall, rigorous amounts of R&D on treatment systems with industry standards have matured enough now to support moving to direct potable reuse as a key option, which can be the more cost-effective approach. For communities to incorporate these technologies, their utilities need to put together a new treatment sequence for their water treatment processes as they upgrade and expand their treatment systems. The technology is out there for them to make it happen. It’s just a matter of evaluating the options and applying the experiences gained from successful programs. This is something Kiewit has been working to help utilities incorporate so they can meet their goal of having a diverse and reliable water portfolio. Reach out to me if your community is interested in pursuing reuse technologies, and let’s have a conversation about it.

Evaporation: A Major Challenge and the Benefits of Our Floating Covers In many industries, evaporation poses a significant challenge, leading to considerable water loss and increased operational costs. Whether in agriculture, industry, or water resource management, preserving this vital resource is more critical than ever. The Impact of Evaporation on Water Resources Evaporation is a natural process where water transitions from a liquid to a gaseous state, escaping into the atmosphere. On reservoirs, retention basins, and ponds, this process can substantially reduce the available water volume. These losses not only affect operational efficiency but also environmental balance, especially in regions where water is a precious resource. Our Floating Covers: An Effective Solution To tackle this problem, we have developed innovative floating covers designed to significantly reduce evaporation. Placed on the water’s surface, they form a physical barrier that limits contact between water and air, thus reducing the rate of evaporation. The Advantages of Our Floating Covers 1. Reduction of Water Loss Our covers can decrease evaporation by up to 98%, conserving thousands of liters of water that would otherwise be lost. This conservation is essential to ensure water availability throughout the year. 2. Financial Savings By limiting water loss, you reduce costs associated with pumping, treatment, and water supply. The savings achieved can be reinvested in other strategic areas of your business. 3. Positive Environmental Impact Preserving water contributes to environmental sustainability. By reducing withdrawals from natural sources, you help protect local ecosystems and promote biodiversity. 4. Protection Against Contamination Floating covers also act as a barrier against external contaminants such as dust, debris, and organic matter. This maintains water quality and reduces the need for chemical treatments. 5. Easy Installation and Maintenance Designed to be durable and resilient, our floating covers require minimal maintenance. Their installation is quick and can be adapted to various sizes and shapes of basins. Why Choose Our Solutions By opting for our floating covers, you invest in proven technology that offers long-term benefits for your business and the environment. Our expertise allows us to provide customized solutions tailored to your specific needs. Conclusion Evaporation is a challenge, but with the right solutions, it can be effectively overcome. Our floating covers offer an innovative response to preserve water, achieve savings, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
