There are so many of you who have reached out with interest in becoming a volunteer, or expressing a need to find some way to give back to the community. The most common reason we hear for not committing is time. Everyone is busy - all of us! What I'd like to help people understand is how easy it is to help an older neighbor with a simple service - when YOU are available. Volunteering with Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley is designed to work on your schedule, with opportunities to serve as little or as much as you'd like. Let's start with transportation to medical appointments. We have a full schedule of requests for rides to doctor's offices. As a volunteer, you are given full access to that schedule so you can see where the care receiver lives, where they need to go, and how long we anticipate this event to take in total. In other words, you'll be given all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding whether or not that particular trip will work for you. Let's say you know you are free next Thursday afternoon and you open the schedule to see Mary, who lives not far from you, needs a ride to a 2 pm appointment. You decide you can do that, so you sign up. On Thursday, you pick Mary up, drive her to her appointment, and then make sure she gets safely home when it is over. If Mary lives 30 miles from you and it's just too much - you don't sign up. That's it. That's how simple it is. When we say to our volunteers that accepting even one assignment a month is an enormous help to us and to those we serve, we mean it. Our opportunities are flexible, short-term, and meaningful, all at the same time - and that is by design. We want this experience to be as satisfying for you as a volunteer as it is for the older neighbors who benefit from your kindness. Join us at our next in-person training on August 20th - or visit our website to take the online training at your own pace - to learn more. We'd love to welcome you to the family! #volunteer #servingseniors #neighbortoneighbor #helpinghands

I joined an amazing organization - Families Forward Charlotte and they need YOU. 1️⃣ Help recruit Family Liaison mentors. Keys to being a great Family Liaison - having the time, being open to forming a new relationship with a family in our program, and approaching their situation with grace and understanding. No specific skills needed! I have attached a flyer that you can pass on to anyone interested. More information and links to sign up can also be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/eNdMjiVf A great way to share the information is from our social media pages. We don't have recent posts about being a Family Liaison but look for them over the coming months. 2️⃣ Share our need for child watch volunteers Volunteers will need to be background checked if 18 or older. Needs are primarily 5:30-8:30pm on Tuesdays and 10:30-1:30pm on Saturdays. A recent social media post about it can be found here. https://lnkd.in/eVH_RYiX 3️⃣ Share our need for meals Meals can be provided in multiple ways: -homemade or store bought frozen meals -prepared or purchased meals to be served at workshops (to children and/or adults). Link to a great example. https://lnkd.in/eVH_RYiX 4️⃣ Connect us with organizations or groups we can speak to community groups or clubs, churches, professional organizations, rotary clubs, etc. Connect us via email or schedule a meeting with the agency and one of our staff. Reach out to Carrie Christian to coordinate. 5️⃣ Help us thank our #volunteers! Write thank you notes or make phone calls to thank Family Liaison mentors or other volunteers. Let me know how many you want to commit to doing and which form you are most comfortable with and I will share the information needed with you. #charlottenc

I was so excited to watch this project come together, from early concepts and strategy to those first design mockups and all the way through to development and deployment. It was a wonderful project and I love the end result. Congrats to Stef Jones, Heather Schneider, Tayo, Joshua, Mike, and the entire SCAN team. Here are a few behind-the-scenes highlights I caught from the sidelines while watching this project come together: 1) We used Octopus.do for rapid and visual sitemap generation. It helped visualize rough page layouts, which helped communicate those ideas with the project's lead designer. 2) This is the second project we have used Storybook on, and it made QA and handling the growing number of layout permutations feel manageable rather than ballooning technical debt. 3) We continue to push image attribution on as many photos as possible. This is an extra bit of work but makes the site feel alive, rich with meta details, and does right by both the photographers, artists, and the subjects. We've been using tippy.js for this and might move to the author's new library, floating-ui.js, in the future. 4) We used GigaPixel by TopazLabs to upscale one of the main hero images. It does a beautiful job of adding super-resolution detail without introducing artifacts or detracting from the original's look and feel. It's a one-time purchase, and we'll definitely be using it in the future. 5) Utility-based CSS frameworks seem to have been a win with the developers; maybe I was the lone skeptic. They also make content modular across a single project and even potentially between different client projects. This is particularly of interest as we lean heavily into WordPress Gutenberg blocks. Combined with Storybook, it could also be a winning strategy.

This holiday season, we're proud to reflect on the difference SCAN has made in the community throughout 2024. By year-end, SCAN will have awarded a total of $1.3 million to support older adults across California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and New Mexico. Here are some of the ways we're taking action as Rebels with a cause: • $1 million awarded to date to vital local services and community support for older adults, addressing nutrition, aging support, transportation, and other basic needs. • $270K to be allocated as part of SCAN's seasonal community giving program to support vulnerable older adults and strengthen communities where they live. • Funding of essential items like warm clothing, food, and hygiene products to older adults in need. • Support of local campaigns and social and specialized programs, including group and holiday-themed activities, designed to foster community connections and combat loneliness and isolation during the holidays.

Dear Everyone, I am not on Facebook or any other social media platform apart from LinkedIn, so the 'post-it-on- Facebook' troops will have to tolerate my non-strictly work-related post (at least I am not posting cute cat photos). I come here today with an honorable mission, to put the spotlight on a fantastic, wonderful, amazing charity based in #BristolUK. Are you sitting at your desk, super happy because it’s Friday and it’s not raining? pretending to work, while wondering about what to do with that extra cash you are intentional about not to waste carelessly? Don’t worry, you are not the only one. Could you, maybe, actually skip the self-indulgence that the Christmas Spirit seems to bring along (just for a bit); yeah, exactly, you know what I mean: those lovely artificially scented candles, the unnecessary cozy socks, the sweetest, most luxurious, boxed chocolates ever…which you frankly know you definitely don't need and will surely not bring you 'True Happiness' at Christmas... Why not save that cash instead and donate it to this amazing, inspiring and impactful #charity based in #BristolUK? It's called #BLACK2NATURE Black2Nature | Bringing Visibly Minority Ethnic (VME) People To Nature Would you help them reach their £10,000 goal on Crowdfunder? They have raised a 11% to date and they have only 9 days left. They really need those funds to keep going. It's simple to do, see here: https://lnkd.in/e8vaMFer Your donation will contribute to make some wonderful local children and their families happier (the real stuff) by connecting to #nature while learning about its healing power. When you donate, the charity will likely get a match funding, which sounds awesome (I didn't even know what a match funding was until yesterday!. Thanks for that and for the incredible work you do at managing the charity, #AyeshaAhmedMendoza!). If you don't donate, you could at least read about the project, how it started, who's the founder hashtag Dr Mya-Rose Birdgirl Craig D.Sc. h.c.-rose (also known as #Birdgirl) and her motivations. It's positive news to spice the season up. If you don't read, would you at least re-post within your network, so as to expand the views on to infinity and beyond?. I assure you this alone will boost your feelings of perceived happiness to maximum levels, lasting at least up to New Year's Eve! (Thank me later!)😇 'Y con esto y un bizcocho...'
