𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞−𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐒𝐀 🌍 So far, we've seen that science-innovation linkages are critical to creating high-impact innovations across technology sectors. Now let's explore where this link is strongest globally. 📊🔬 It's clear from the figure that science-related patents are generally more impactful, as shown by the share of high-impact patents out of all patents in each group. However, the United States stands out as having the largest difference between these shares of science-related and science-unrelated patents. This underlines that the US innovation system seems to benefit more from science than other countries. 🇺🇸✨ Why is the U.S. innovation system potentially unique? U.S. universities often have strong ties to industry, facilitating the seamless transfer of scientific research into practical applications. In addition, the U.S. innovation ecosystem thrives on a strong culture of entrepreneurship and risk-taking, attracting top talent from around the world. These factors likely contribute to the U.S. being more effective than other regions in translating scientific ideas into high-impact innovations. This may also be an important factor for the higher productivity growth in the US compared to Europe. 🚀💡 But what does this mean for Switzerland? How important is science for fostering high-impact domestic innovation? 🤔🇨🇭 Stay tuned for the next and final part of our miniseries, where we'll explore these questions and more! 📅🔍 #Innovation #Research #USA #Europe #importance_of_science_for_innovation P.S. 📢“Beyond the Golden Triangle”: New research will explore the links between innovative clusters across the country In the last decade, Cambridge-based organisations have worked alongside universities, companies and research institutions from across the country in collaborative R&D projects funded by Innovate UK. This collaboration between regions is a cornerstone of the UK’s world-leading innovation ecosystem, but the extent of interregional connections is not well-understood and more could be done to encourage relationships between places like Cambridge and economic geographies outside of the London-Oxford-Cambridge ‘Golden Triangle’. Now, new research from The Growing Together Alliance and the Bennett Institute for Public Policy will shed light on the network of economic interconnections and innovative partnerships between regions. By mapping ‘knowledge intensive’ clusters across the country and gathering local insights on what makes economic geographies tick, this research will help support a locally-informed, evidence-based approach to regional economic growth. If the #MSCA didn’t already exist, we would need to invent it. A programme that not only fosters talent development but also strengthens transnational research networks and promotes excellence in research is exactly what we need in today’s world of complex global challenges. It has developed good practices and guidelines on topics like #doctoralsupervision and career development, which have been inspirational at both national and institutional levels. However, the low success rates remain a concern. The MSCA must play an important role in the next EU framework programme #FP10, and its budget deserves to be doubled to reach its full potential.
Science Europe, in collaboration with key research and innovation organisations, has signed a joint statement calling for enhanced support and recognition for the #MSCA programme. The MSCA is crucial for developing talent and advancing Europe's research capacity through mobility, training, and international collaboration. Despite its significant contributions to #EuropeanResearch and #Innovation, the programme is notably absent from Mario Draghi’s report and the Mission Letters for the proposed Executive Vice-President for People, Skills and Preparedness, and Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation. Our joint statement urges the European Commission, European Parliament, and the Council of the European Union to: 💶 Increase the MSCA budget 🧪 Preserve its bottom-up research approach We strongly believe that supporting MSCA’s to achieve its full potential is key to maintaining Europe's competitiveness and bolstering the capabilities of world-class research. 🔗 Read the full statement: https://lnkd.in/ewwbdzzs Signatories include: Science Europe, Aurora Universities , CESAER, Coimbra Group, The European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO), EuroTech Universities Alliance, EU-LIFE, The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, Initiative for Science in Europe, League of European Research Universities (LERU), Marie Curie Alumni Association, and YERUN - Young European Research Universities.

Creative skills and leadership drive regional economic growth The concept of unifying a growth industry such as film with educational systems is based on the importance of innovation. It is through innovation that communities can break out of long established and stagnated thought cycles of how regional growth can be achieved and allows for the creation of new ways of envisioning a sustainable future. Through partnerships between the innovation-based centers of education and innovation-based industries, new ecosystems are possible that provide economic, cultural, and social growth with environmentally conscious consequences. The future does not mandate a zero-sum result. As this article of such innovative planning progress in England demonstrates, there is a better way of thinking, that can achieve a more equitable future while creating meaningful progress. Similar multi-industry innovation progress is being made through the new Texas A&M Virtual Production Institute (https://lnkd.in/g2HFc7cn) Connecting communities, industry and education, and supporting growth through innovation, is not only possible, but absolutely necessary. https://lnkd.in/gqT-BWmm
