Professor David James, CEO of Labosport Group, is a Director and Fellow of the (ISEA) International Sports Engineering Association and has been continuously involved with the organization since 2002. This year's ISEA conference, in its 15th year, reaffirmed its status as the premier global gathering for sports engineering research, attracting top academic researchers, industry leaders, and representatives from prestigious sports federations such as FIFA, World Rugby, International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the International Tennis Federation . The focus on sport surfaces was a highlight of the conference where David James chaired several sessions, showcasing groundbreaking research. Notably, the collaborative work between Loughborough University and Labosport on the rotational traction test for synthetic turf, led by Harry McGowen, was presented. This innovative research promises to enhance the safety and efficiency of sports surfaces. Professor David James and Professor Paul Fleming also presented a paper on their work with the FIH regarding the step change to using 'dry' turf for elite level play in field hockey. David Rigby and Carolyn Webb, both with Labosport UK, were also in attendance, taking advantage of the opportunity to engage with the latest advancements and networking with leading experts in the field. For those interested in exploring the research further, full peer-reviewed papers are available here: Springer Link: https://lnkd.in/eEVPhG4M Nature: https://lnkd.in/eCns6BGu #SportsEngineering #ISEA #ISEA2024 #Innovation #Research #Collaboration #SportsScience

As we gear up for the Olympics, delve into the captivating intersection of mathematics, physics, and sports with the "Be a champion: Fascinating facts you didn't know about sports and science" exhibition. Curated by Amandine Aftalion from France's Centre national de la recherche scientifique and vividly illustrated by Estelle Chauvard, this display features 10 engaging panels that explore intriguing questions such as: What's the fastest sport? Why do runners lean into curves? What's the advantage of running with bent arms? Discover why a sprinter might slow down before the finish line, how basketball players seem to defy gravity, and why cycling faster feels more stable. The exhibition also unravels the science behind drafting in running, the benefits of swimming slightly underwater, and the art of scoring soccer free kicks. Designed to make complex scientific concepts accessible, "Be a Champion" offers simple, illustrated explanations perfect for all ages. Interested in sharing this knowledge? Libraries, town halls, parks, and schools can download a free high-resolution PDF in English or French for printing. Just fill out the form to access your copy! On November 6th, at Mainz University (Germany), I had the privilege of presenting on the future of sport and the responsible integration of technology in a way that preserves the essence and spirit of athletic competition. This inspiring event, titled “Connecting Technology with Humans – An Ethical Challenge?” and led by Professor Holger Preuss with the support of Professor Mathias Schubert, invited us to explore the fascinating interplay between human capability and technological progress. We delved into questions about the challenges and ethical considerations of merging human experience with technological advancements, pondering whether these two elements might even come into competition. 1. Why connecting Technology and Humans is a challenge? And why should it be? 2. Do we have “competition” between Human and Technology? 3. For the moment, we have technology developed on human specifications and objectives, will we reach a point where technology will become self-reliable and autonomous in the articulation between hardware (robots) and Software (artificial intelligence)? 4. As sport is also a political and geopolitics stake, does it bring an ethical challenge? 5. How sport can help this bridge? Through Futurous initiatives— the think tank on the future of sport (Futurous Observatory), our capacity building programme for sport organisations, bidding committee and government (Futurous Academy) and the visionary Futurous Games—we are exploring how the world of sport can act as a bridge, guiding technology toward positive growth while safeguarding the human-centric values at its core. I thank both Holger and Mathias, as well as the attendance for the discussions we had post the conference; they were not only thought-provoking but also profoundly inspiring, underscoring sport’s unique role in shaping a future where technology enhances rather than overshadows human potential. #sport #Future #technology #ethics #moral #esport #robots #Futurous #education #consulting #BidCommittee #Governance #Government #2036Olympics #India #Qatar #KSA #Europe #MiddleEast #Russia #integrity

The WOW of New European Bauhaus Forum 2024 Look Back at the recordings or attend the last day - Friday 12 April - live/or via live stream. When the NEB movement was kicked off in September 2020 by Mrs President Von der Leyen, the name - New European Bauhaus - was controversial for some and appreciated by others. It surely attracted interest, aroused energy for creating change together. In a swift tempo the EU Commission's Joint Research Centre Designed and Delivered the foundation for the New European Bauhaus movement in cocreation with hundreds of partners: NEB Prizes, Calls, Lighthouses, Festival. This 2nd NEB festival demonstrates the value of rapid prototyping and quick learning in three years and is all about Disseminating contagious examples of good projects and actions by a growing group of change makers. NEB stands as a Now!How?Wow!! House. I looked back at 10 mind blowing Visions for an Alternative Everyday in ARCHIPELAGO OF POSSIBLE FUTURES with Cooking Sections, ROTOR, Future Farmer Amy Franceschini and more. Hope giving is the panel on NEB Economy with Michela Magas, Stephen Quest, Alexandra Pisco and Indy Johar of Dark Matter Labs, who states: 'We are in the middle of a paradigm shift. Capital holders are starting to see the risks. Instead of an excavating system, there is a move towards a flourishing one. It is either fly or die together. Europe has the democratic infrastructure to make the systemic change'. #neweuropeanbauhaus

Inspirational final keynote at the (ISEA) International Sports Engineering Association 2024 conference from David Constantine MBE on the value of user-centred design. Really inspiring to see the human element explored so deeply in such a technical setting. We (engineers) often get lost in the world of product optimisation, not least because the human elements of design can be so hard to quantify. Great to see such a clear example explored in depth.
