Canada CCS Alert! Shell has taken FID for the Polaris project at Scotford, Alberta. The project aims to capture CO2 emissions, up to 40% and 22% respectively from the company’s refinery and chemicals complex, potentially reducing Scope 1 CO2 emissions by approximately 650,000 tons annually. In collaboration with its 50/50 partner ATCO EnPower, Shell will transport the captured CO2 via a 22 km pipeline to the Atlas Hub, where it will be stored underground in the Basal Cambrian Sands. The first phase of the hub has also reached FID and is expected to begin operations by the end of 2028, coinciding with the Polaris project's timeline. The FID is great news for the CCUS industry in Canada, especially after the cancellation of the Capital Power Genesee project earlier this year due to financial reasons. We expect 2024/2025 to be decisive for the industry globally as companies continue to sanction or cancel previously announced projects.

The Southern Oil Pipeline project, spearheaded by the Beira Bulk Petroleum Company (BBPC), is a landmark initiative that will reshape energy distribution in Southern Africa. Known as the Harare-Lusaka Oil Pipeline, it aims to streamline fuel supply to Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This ambitious project is expected to lower fuel costs and enhance regional energy security. Key milestones include the completion of feasibility studies by S&P Global in April 2022, affirming the project's economic and strategic potential. BBPC has acquired 400 hectares of land in Zambia for a state-of-the-art fuel terminal, positioning it as a distribution hub. Provisional wayleave approvals from the National Railways of Zimbabwe have paved the way for the pipeline route. Strategic collaborations with stakeholders, such as CPMZ, NOIC, and regional governments, are central to integrating the project into national energy frameworks. EPCM Holdings Pty Limited is under technical review as the lead contractor, with construction anticipated soon. This project aligns with President Nyusi's vision of optimizing regional fuel logistics, offering significant economic benefits by reducing transport costs and ensuring a reliable fuel supply. The upcoming memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the DRC emphasizes regional cooperation, underpinned by the SADC Charter of 2012. With groundbreaking planned for early 2025, BBPC is focused on finalizing technical studies and securing investment. The Southern Oil Pipeline stands as a pivotal development, set to transform Southern Africa's energy landscape by improving fuel accessibility and driving economic growth across the region.

Australia’s first pipeline was commissioned in the late 1800s to transport water to the Coolgardie gold fields. This set a worldwide precedent by being more than 10 times longer than any previous pipeline. The Moonie to Brisbane pipeline was the first Australian pipeline built for oil transportation. It was completed in 1964 and was 306 kilometres long. The 440km Roma to Brisbane pipeline came into operation in March 1969 and is Australia’s oldest natural gas pipeline. Today, Australia has around 42,000km of natural gas transmission pipelines that efficiently transport gas under high pressure from where it is produced to the outskirts of cities both large and small. Entropy will sell power produced with a 15MW natural gas powered turbine combined with CO2 capture and sequestration. https://lnkd.in/g3ABYFb7 160000 tons of CO2 per year will be captured from gas plants and stored at a cost of $127 million. 🇺🇸 🚨 Rio Grande LNG ruling underscores risk of megaprojects NextDecade said it was assessing its options and that construction on Trains 1, 2 and 3 is continuing. But it also said it would need to evaluate “the impact of the court’s decision on the timing of a positive final investment decision on Train 4.” That final decision, which would give Bechtel the green light to proceed on the next train, was originally slated for the second half of 2024 and in its release detailing the new $4.3 billion EPC contract with Bechtel, NextDecade said the deal’s price validity extends only through Dec. 31 of this year.
