Next Wednesday 22nd is International Day for Biological Diversity, a day dedicated to promoting understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Biodiversity, including the variety of plants and ecosystems, are the pillars of our civilisation, providing food, medicines, and basic healthcare. The theme for 2024 is “Be Part of the Plan” highlights the urgent need to move from agreement to action in order to achieve sustainable biodiversity. The call to action from the United Nations is for all stakeholders to reverse the loss of biodiversity by adopting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which sets goals to stop and reverse the loss of nature by 2050. The framework includes measures such as restoring 30% of ecosystems and reducing food waste by half by 2030. The plan also emphasises the interconnectedness of biodiversity and climate change, both of which need to be addressed to secure a sustainable future. We call upon the government of national unity to mainstream biodiversity and attend to the critical obligations of preventing biodiversity loss and conserving the variability and functioning of ecosystems.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coordinate the SOI Global Dialogue, which was established in 2016 to enhance cooperation on the conservation and sustainable management of the marine and coastal environment around the globe. Today, 17/6, the European Council formally adopted the – first of its kind – regulation on nature restoration, proposed under the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030, which is part of the European Green Deal. It sets specific, legally binding targets and obligations for nature restoration in each of the listed ecosystems – from terrestrial to marine, freshwater and urban ecosystems. The regulation will help the EU reach its international commitments, in particular the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework agreed at the 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15). ⭕ Companies subject to CSRD are also expected to participate in these efforts. One of the main objectives of the ESRS E4 Biodiversity & Ecosystems standard is to understand the plans and capacity of the company to adapt its strategy and business model in line with relevant aspects of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the vision of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and its relevant goals and targets. Over 80% of European habitats are in poor shape. Past efforts to protect and preserve nature have not been able to reverse this worrying trend. This law aims to put measures in place to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. In recent decades, the abundance and diversity of wild insect pollinators in Europe have declined dramatically. To address this, the regulation also introduces specific requirements for measures to reverse the decline of pollinator populations by 2030 at the latest. The regulation aims to mitigate climate change and the effects of natural disasters. It will help the EU to fulfil its international environmental commitments, and to restore European nature. Under the new rules, member states must plan ahead and submit national restoration plans to the Commission, showing how they will deliver on the targets. They must also monitor and report on their progress, based on EU-wide biodiversity indicators. The regulation will now be published in the EU’s Official Journal and enter into force. Biological diversity encompasses a wide range of plants, animals, and microorganisms, as well as genetic variations within species and diverse ecosystems. This year's celebration leads up to to the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) in Colombia from October 21 to November 1, where our local Associate Consultores Ambientales y Ocupacionales - CAO Consultores will be participating. The decline in biodiversity poses a threat to all, including our health. While there is increasing awareness of the value of biological diversity for future generations, the number of species continues to diminish. "Together, we contribute to maintaining the essential ecosystem services provided by biodiversity, such as crop pollination, climate regulation, water purification, and protection against natural disasters.
