Empowering Parents: New Breastfeeding Support at Werribee Mercy Hospital At Werribee Mercy Hospital, we’ve introduced free antenatal breastfeeding classes and expanded access to breast pumps for our community. Running monthly for over a year, these face-to-face classes are designed to educate and empower parents, helping them prepare for the realities of feeding a newborn. As Amanda Mutasa, one of our Lactation Consultants, shared: “Breastfeeding is a part of parenting. Learning about it during pregnancy can make all the difference in the postpartum journey. With the right support, families can overcome challenges and feel confident in feeding their newborns.” Additionally, with funding from Mercy Health Foundation, we’ve also purchased essential teaching tools - such as dolls, model breasts and a textbook - that enhance our breastfeeding classes and support new parents on their journey. We also now have 13 breast pumps available for hire, ensuring more families can access the tools they need to provide breast milk for their babies. We’re excited about these improvements and the positive impact they’re making for parents in our community.

Our goal as a baby feeding and maternal health company is to give evidence-based clinical support to women and caregivers throughout the pregnancy and postpartum journey. We do not shame or continue the stigma that breast is the only way. We believe with the right amount of care and education, families may be able to breastfeed or extend the duration (if that is what they want), but families are not always receiving that type of support in a clinical setting. SimpliFed will continue to hold space for our patients and families, allowing them to make their own decisions with every ounce of information we can give them. That's why we've partnered with Willow Innovations, Inc., Bobbie and Emily Oster to bring you the 2024 State of Feeding report — redefining expectations and better equipping parents for the journey ahead. We surveyed 1,899 new parents who have had a baby in the last year and here's one of our biggest takeaways: parents don't have enough support OR education whether they are breastfeeding, formula feeding, bottle feeding, or combo feeding. 18% of respondents said they received no support or education on breastfeeding. 38% said they received no support or education on pumping. 47% said they received no support or education on formula. Advancing Breastfeeding Support: Insights from A Lactation Counselor Training Program🤱🏻 📈 According to Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics in 2023, only 73.97% of babies in Indonesia received exclusive breastfeeding. There are several challenges to achieving exclusive breastfeeding, including limited public facilities and policies to support breastfeeding mothers, lack of family support, medical conditions, and limited education and awareness about this essential phase—even among healthcare professionals. 🤰🏻 It is crucial to provide education on prenatal stimulation, early breastfeeding initiation (Inisiasi Menyusui Dini / IMD), and the important role that fathers and other family members play in supporting exclusive breastfeeding. This education should ideally begin in the last trimester of pregnancy or even earlier, ensuring parents are well-informed and prepared. ⭐ I recently completed an annual breastfeeding management course for healthcare professionals and lactation counselors, focusing on managing issues such as low milk supply, perceived insufficient milk supply, baby weight faltering, and oversupply. This course did not only deepened my knowledge of managing various breastfeeding challenges but also highlight the importance of being an empathetic, understanding lactation counselor dedicated to helping parents fulfill their baby’s right to be breastfed. A big thank you to the inspiring speakers—dr. Sarah Audia Hasna, IBCLC, dr. Shane Tuty Cornish, CBS, IBCLC, dr. Dyah Arum Kusumaningtyas, M.Gizi, IBCLC, dr. Pritta Diyanti, CIMI, CBS, IBCLC from Nurtur.inc —and all participants for the insightful discussions! #Breastfeeding #LactationCounselor #ClinicalPractice #ContinuingProfessionalDevelopment

Exciting News: New Publication Alert! 🌟 I'm thrilled to share my latest research, now published in Breastfeeding Medicine! This study dives into the interaction of Race and Pregnancy intentions on Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration in the United States. We found that the probability of never breastfeeding was the greatest among non-Hispanic (NH) Black women across all pregnancy intentions. However, the probability of breastfeeding for more than 6 months is highest for NH-others or multiracial for both intended, ambivalent, and neither intended, while highest for NH-Black for mother-only intended. This work wouldn't have been possible without the support and collaboration of my amazing co-authors, and mentors Adetola Louis-Jacques and Deepthi Varma who provided invaluable insights along the way. Background: Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a child’s health. This study investigated the effect of an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Methods: In this randomized educational trial, 132 pregnant women were divided into two intervention groups and one control group using a multi-stage random clustering method. The first intervention group received interventions based on the TPB. In the extended theory group, interventions to promote breastfeeding self-efficacy and social support for breastfeeding were also provided. In order to collect information, the constructs of the planned behavior questionnaire, Dennis’s breastfeeding self-efficacy questionnaire and boateng’s breastfeeding social support questionnaire were used, all of which have confirmed validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test, analysis of covariance, one-way analysis of variance, and chi-square and Bonferroni tests. Results: All the constructs of the TPB in both groups improved after the intervention (P<0.05). The results also showed that although the breastfeeding self-efficacy score was improved in the extended group (0.009), the three groups did not show significant differences in this regard (P=0.241). Although the social support score improved in the extended group, this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.145). The analysis of variance revealed that the scores for intention and behavior had significant differences among the three groups (P=0.0001). However, the post hoc Bonferroni test showed no significant difference between the two intervention groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that the constructs of both the TPB and the extended TPB could effectively promote EBF behavior. It appears that combining the use of planned behavior theory constructs with social support structures and breastfeeding self-efficacy can be effective in promoting breastfeeding behavior. #BreastFeeding, #TheoryOfPlannedBehavior, #SocialSupport, #SelfEfficacy

In Nebraska we have a coalition, Healthy Nebraska. I found the breastfeeding rates from 2022. Congrats to the 3 counties that achieved 100% breastfeeding initiation! Rock Wheeler Garfield I’m going to poke around and see if I can find some stats for 2023. Research shows that if planning to breastfeed, finding your care team and meeting with them in pregnancy increases initiation and duration of breastfeeding and allows many more mothers to reach their breastfeeding goals. Many can support your journey from a doula to an LC, to an IBCLC, to a midwife, coaches and more! I am a Perinatal Coach and I love to help moms find their goals in motherhood and we work together to achieve them. Breastfeeding is a polarizing situation. This is not meant to make anyone feel bad about their journey. We do know there are incredible challenges that moms face in their journey and I aim to be one resource of many to support and uplift others on their journey. I offer free discovery calls. We can talk about your goals in motherhood, from breastfeeding to weaning to feeling ok with not mothering how you thought you wanted to mother. This is an important aspect. Everyone has things that pop up that don’t go as anticipated in mothering. From relationships to jobs to housing and more. We can get down about it or we can let go of our own inner expectations. https://lnkd.in/guptwZwu

It is crucial that all Saint Lucian women who are breastfeeding or pregnant and planning to breastfeed receive the support they need. Expecting nurses in the hospital setting to provide all the necessary support for a successful breastfeeding journey is unrealistic. More than 5 minutes at the bedside is required for a successful and long-term breastfeeding experience. #BreastfeedingSupport #MaternalHealth #SaintLuciaWomen

It is well-established that early breastfeeding initiation within the first hour of birth is an important intervention to reduce childhood morbidities and mortalities. In this study, we found that 1 in 4 women in PNG delayed early initiation of breastfeeding. Unplanned pregnancy, caesarean section, no newborn skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and exposure to media predicted delayed initiation of breastfeeding. Interestingly, birth at home or in the village reduces the likelihood of delayed initiation of breastfeeding (which will entail further qualitative inquiry). We suggest that breastfeeding advocacy and promotion programmes, strengthening health workers’ capacity to address factors influencing delayed initiation of breastfeeding, and promoting optimal breastfeeding practices are required. #breastfeeding #infantfeedingpractice #png Available online: https://lnkd.in/gtFkrhBD

One of the most common questions I hear during my antenatal and postnatal consultations is: ❓How long should each feed take? Is this question familiar for you? Drop me a comment below, I'd love to hear about you🫶 This is a valid concern for many breastfeeding mothers, whether they are first-time mothers or have been breastfeeding for a while. The answer, however, isn’t straightforward. Feeding times can vary significantly from one baby to another, from one feeding session to the next, and even as your baby grows. Today we're going to see: ❗Why you shouldn’t be too focused on the clock. ❗The factors that can affect how long a feeding session may take. ❗My top 5 tips to ensure your baby is feeding effectively. ⬇️⬇️ 🌐https://lnkd.in/ehxs-Mkw @carlacorralibclc (Blog link in Bio) #lactationconsultant #IBCLC #blog #lenghtofthefeeds #whatsnormal #factorsmayaffect #goodlatch #audibleswallowing #toptips #guidance #information #seeksupport #nicunurse #maternitynurse #lactationsupport #newborn #nursing #bonding #empower #confidence #consultant #infantfeeding #newparents

Not everyone is aware that immediate breastfeeding help is available for new families. There are lots of options, and some are available 24/7. Options include: -The National Women's Health and Breastfeeding helpline is available between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (eastern time) Monday through Friday. Help is available in English and Spanish. Volunteers are available all over the country through organizations like La Leche League and Breastfeeding USA. Check their websites for details. -Sometimes hospitals maintain breastfeeding clinics or helplines. Check local hospitals for details. -WIC is an excellent breastfeeding support resource for those who qualify. -Investigate your state's health department. Some states offer breastfeeding support via a helpline. For example, the Arizona Department of Health Services staffs a 24/7 breastfeeding helpline. -Lactation apps can also provide some support, although this has limitations. (I caution parents to avoid overusing tracking apps and instead focus on multiple factors and observations of the baby.) A great book can also provide breastfeeding help and guidance. Read Protecting Your Potential for Breastfeeding by Kelly M. Durbin, IBCLC, for valuable information about getting breastfeeding off to a good start and avoiding common pitfalls. It's available from online bookstores, and the eBook format is still only $4.99 on Amazon! Leave a review; this helps others find the book. #breastfeedingsupport #lactationsupport #breastfeedinghelpline #WICbreastfeedingsupport #volunteerbreastfeedingsupport #protectbreastfeeding
