International Day of Rural Women 15 October 2024. Rural women worldwide are champions of resilience and sustainability. They are unsung heroes, driving change and progress in their communities. This year's theme: "Rural Women Sustaining Nature for the collective future: Building Climate Resilience, Conserving Biodiversity and Care for land towards gender equality and empowerment of women and girls". This post honors their struggles, achievements, and contributions. Internationally, rural women face challenges that include limited access to education, available food resources, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Many rural women are subjected to gender-based violence, discrimination, and cultural barriers. Several are subjected to climate change, food and nutrition insecurity, as well as environmental degradation. Rural women tend to experience social exclusion in terms of misrepresentation, participation, and decision-making power in matters which affect them. Elsewhere, there are some success stories where rural women are managing varietues of rural cooperatives and entrepreneurship responsibilities. Others engage in the innovative agricultural practices and sustainable farming. Also, there are different kinds of community-driven initiatives for education, healthcare, and social justice and empowerment through technology and digital literacy. Some lnternational and regional organizations design capacity building worksops and advocacy for gender equality. In Africa, including Zimbabwe, rural women's role in agriculture and food security has played a vital role in addressing the food and nutrition security for older women. In other countries like Asia, empowerment has been through microfinance and entrepreneurship In Latin America, indigenous women's rights and environmental activism has been so much emphasised. In Europe, rural women's contributions to sustainable development has played a centre stage in improving the quality life of the rural women. In the Pacific Islands, women's leadership in climate change and adaptation strategies to combat food and nutrition insecurity has been on the spotlight. The identified solutions however are recommended to increase access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. This entails supporting women-led initiatives and entrepreneurship, address gender-based violence and cultural norms, promote sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. There has been suggestions to enhance representation and participation of rural women in matters which affect them. The call to action is to join the movement to empower rural women worldwide. So, it is yet another time of the year where the world comes together to celebrate International Women's Day, however, I told myself I wasn't going to celebrate the day with the usual ‘women are strong’, ‘women are resilient’ or ‘women are amazing’ catch phrase because there is a need to take urgent action against the challenges confronting women. Just two days ago, about 200 women were kidnapped on their farms in Borno. Yesterday, over two hundred people including women and children, were kidnapped in Kaduna. A week ago, a 20-year-old woman seeking admission was raped and killed in Ogun State. How long are we going to continue to keep quiet for? When are we going to take a bold step as a nation to protect our women from being abused, kidnapped, raped, maimed, disrespected, assaulted, deprived of political and leadership positions? Just how long? Undoubtedly, women are strong, but it is high time we moved beyond just acknowledging women's strength. It is time to take concrete actions to empower, protect, support and uplift our women in all spheres of society. From advocating for equal opportunities in the workplace, ensuring access to education and healthcare for all women, to ensuring that women are protected; let's strive for the real change. Let us come together to support initiatives that sponsor women to vie for politics, ensuring their voices are heard and represented at all levels of government. Together, let's create a world where every woman can thrive and reach her full potential. Happy International Women's Day! #internationalwomensday2024 #womenempowerment
