Making data matter - it’s a collaborative push. 👉 Our biggest thanks to everyone who participated in our session yesterday morning at the 7th OECD World Forum on Well-being. What resulted into success is bringing about sustainable and inclusive wellbeing in practice, we heard from our great panelists: Ana Boskovic, Joint Research Centre, European Commission, Alina Şandor, Joint Research Centre, European Commission, Carrie Exton, OECD - OCDE WISE, Enrico Giovannini, Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS), Richard Heys, Office for National Statistics and Robert Morgan, Welsh Government. From the Future Generations Act in Wales, and the Interservice working group on sustainable and inclusive wellbeing of the European Commission, to the How’s life reports from the OECD, a lot of work has been and continues to be done. There is absolutely no need to start from scratch. At the session, we aimed to identify how to be helpful. We heard from Enrico Giovannini how it’s essential we “stimulate the whole society” to care for sustainable and inclusive wellbeing - solely a fantastic indicator system, or a piece of legislation aren’t enough on their own. As MERGE, we aim to help and support the various interventions required. MERGE brings together tens of millions of euros and tens of collaborators around the world. But what was clear was that we are not alone in our efforts but acting collectively on the different levels. Through convergence and coordination we are committed to work towards sustainable and inclusive wellbeing. 🧶 Thank you for the great intros to our Tuuli Hirvilammi, Mario Biggeri, Rutger Hoekstra and Dr. Christoph Gran and Jenni Kilpi for leading the panel. Thanks OECD - OCDE for a great collaboration on this one and giving us the opportunity! I had a great time talking about #greenjobs and #sustainable #labourmarkets last week at ÖSB Gruppe. Bottom line: If we want to fulfill people‘s needs within #planetaryboundaries, we need to widen the debate beyond (male-dominated) technology-focused jobs and sectoral upskilling. There is much potential in tackling the challenges of delivering more sustainable labour markets and improving human wellbeing and equality in an integrated, #ecosocial manner. Thanks a lot to Michael Gizicki-Neundlinger and Leonie Bleiker for inviting me! (If you’re interested in our research in this area, check out the TransEuroWorkS project!)

How can we 'measure what matters'? 📈 Join the upcoming MERGE online debate looking at metrics and policies that go beyond GDP to build an economy that supports sustainable and inclusive wellbeing. Register now 👉 https://lnkd.in/et3xVXCT
Measuring what matters - Economy that would improve wellbeing for all, now and in the future - 🗓️3rd Feb 3:00-4:30 PM CET; 🌐open for all The limitations of GDP growth have become undeniable. Europe is facing a range of challenges, from geopolitical tensions and conflicts, to rising living costs, political polarisation, and more. At the same time, humanity is breaching planetary boundaries, putting the economies and future wellbeing at our own peril. Thus, we need a reimagination of competitiveness, and how to make data matter in building sustainable and inclusive wellbeing. Above all, we need a clear understanding of the required and coordinated actions. We invite you to come together and discuss these questions at this public policy event: 🔹 How can we move from beyond-GDP discussions to the development of coherent policies, metrics, and models for sustainable and inclusive wellbeing? 🔹 Which metrics, models, and policies are available for building it? 🔹 How can we design new policy frameworks to be more user-friendly and accessible for building an economy that supports sustainable and inclusive wellbeing? Event details: 🗓️ Date & time: 3rd February, 3:00-4:30 PM CET. 🌐 Online, open for all. 🔗 Agenda details and registration form can be found in the comment. During the event, we'll be hearing from MERGE researchers, including Tuuli Hirvilammi, Tampere University | Rutger Hoekstra, Universiteit Leiden | Rob Van Eynde, Universitat de Barcelona | Brent Bleys, Ghent University | Robert Costanza, UCL Institute for Global Prosperity | Mario Biggeri, Università degli Studi di Firenze. Health and Safety and Human Sustainability In recent years, organizations have shown a growing interest in sustainability. While it may seem like a modern concept, sustainability has always been integral to our existence. Humans are inherently programmed to sustain themselves, adapt, and thrive from the very beginning of life. Sustainability is not merely a trendy term or a checklist for professionals. It is a deeply interconnected concept that centers on the continuation of humanity. It considers every factor that could hinder or jeopardize human progress and legacy, making it an essential framework for long-term survival and success. The biopsychosocial concept offers a comprehensive lens to understand sustainability. It highlights the interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors that shape human behavior and well-being. At its core, sustainability ensures that these interconnected systems—biological, psychological, and societal—are preserved and enhanced to endure over time. In context of health and safety, human sustainability is about creating environments where individuals can work, grow, and contribute without compromising their physical or mental well-being. It transcends the traditional aim of minimizing risks and instead focuses on fostering conditions that empower people to reach their full potential while maintaining equilibrium in all facets of life. #SustainableWorkplaces #MentalHealthAwareness #PeopleFirst #ESG #FutureOfWork #CorporateResponsibility #EmployeeEngagement #WorkplaceCulture #Leadership

Earlier this year, I moderated alongside my ToBe Research colleagues Philippe Roman and Fanny Dethier from Ichec Brussels Management School, an extremely interesting round table discussion with EU policymakers looking at the desirability, feasibility and potential impact of a transformative indicators initiative which would aim to overcome the pre-eminence of conventional socio-economic evaluations such as GDP. It became clear in the discussion that the biggest challenges related to enforcing sustainable wellbeing metrics at top levels of governance do not lie in the ex-ante definition of “the right” or “the best” indicators, but in being aware of a series of technical quality, theoretical adequacy and potential of amplification challenges. The final proposition for an EU transformative indicators initiative presented here in their paper integrates theoretical and empirical insights with the practical realities shared by EU practitioners in our round table discussion. For quality criteria, standards should ensure accuracy, reliability, robustness, timeliness, coherence, comparability, accessibility and clarity. The theoretical framework should be holistic, boundary-limited, systemic and integrate individual, societal and planetary wellbeing domains. For the impact criteria, the paper suggests drawing on the roundtable’s recommendations but also pushing closer to an ideal transformative indicators initiative, inspired by the transformative approaches observed in the “transformist” group of indicator initiatives identified in the analysis. This involves integrating the transformative indicators initiative into the EU’s Impact Assessment mechanisms to enhance decision-making processes, establishing a mix of quantitative and qualitative indicator targets, and optimising resources to foster synergies among existing frameworks and agencies. This comprehensive approach aims to position the EU at the forefront of global efforts to integrate sustainable wellbeing into policymaking. By adopting this transformative framework, the EU can catalyse significant socio-economic changes that align with long-term sustainability goals, setting a global standard for others to follow. 📖 Read of the day: "Measuring sustainable and inclusive wellbeing: a multidimensional dashboard approach" from the rock stars at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. And perhaps unsurprisingly, the key indicator "Sustainable and inclusive wellbeing in the EU" is on a (slight) decreasing trend since 2019. This must become our #compass ! “In times of renewed discussions around the need to boost EU’s competitiveness, the SIWB dashboard can be a central monitoring tool to make sure that reigniting Europe’s economic engine does not become an end in itself but rather a means for delivering wellbeing to all people of the current and future generations, and to the planet.” This is it! The notion of Wellbeing Economy brings us a holistic, coherent and actionable strategy for the future of the European Union! Competitiveness is a mean to that end, environmental stability is also a mean to that end. Like endless GDP growth they should not be pursued for their own sake, but only when conducive to the overarching aim of living well within planetary boundaries for the people of Europe. The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) together with the Green European Foundation is finalising a brief to provide specific recommendations to policy makers on the best way to foster Wellbeing Economy approaches in different EU sectors and processes (indicators and modelling but also governance, finance, social inequalities and global considerations). ▶️ The report will be published next month and stay tuned for the promotion event !
