A Decade of Cleanliness and Transformation in India 🇮🇳🌿 Today marks a significant milestone—10 years since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a movement that redefined the approach to sanitation and cleanliness in India. From its inception on 2nd October 2014, this mission has aimed to improve public health, sanitation infrastructure, and waste management practices across the country. Here’s a look at some key initiatives and achievements over the last decade: 🚮Building 110 million+ Toilets: Over 110 million household toilets were constructed, making the country open-defecation free (ODF) by 2019, which drastically improved access to sanitation. 🌍Solid and Liquid Waste Management: Significant strides in waste management have been made by promoting waste segregation, recycling, and establishing compost pits. Cities have adopted new systems to ensure cleaner urban areas. 🏘️GOBARdhan Scheme: Focusing on waste-to-wealth solutions, the GOBARdhan initiative converts cattle dung and agricultural waste into biogas and fertilizers, promoting sustainability and benefitting rural communities. 💧Water and Sewage Infrastructure: Investments of ₹9,600 crore in urban water supply and sewage treatment have improved water quality and infrastructure, especially around Ganga basin areas. ♻️ Behavioral Change: The mission has not only been about infrastructure but also about instilling a culture of cleanliness. Through various campaigns, millions of people have embraced cleanliness as a way of life. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement, especially in waste management, water conservation, and rural sanitation coverage. Karnataka is the largest silk-producing state in India, contributing over 70% of the country’s total silk production, with an annual output of approximately 8,200 metric tonnes of silk. For every 1 kg of silk produced, 2 kg of silkworm pupae are discarded as waste. At ecoGenie biotech, we’re tackling this waste management challenge by extracting high-quality chitosan from discarded silkworm pupae. At the Environment and Ecology Department, BIS our technical committee has developed key standards for solid waste management, promoting efficient, safe, and sustainable practices: 🔹 𝐒𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 – Standards like IS 16557: 2016 empower individuals to segregate waste at home, reducing the load on landfills. 🔹 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥 – Through IS 12662 and IS 18664, we ensure waste is safely handled and disposed of, encouraging resource recovery such as composting. 🔹 𝐄-𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 – Standards like IS 17862 ensure that hazardous e-waste is managed responsibly, safeguarding our environment. According to Niti Aayog, India produces 650 million tonnes of crop residue each year. The recent landslides across the Western Ghats are not only an ecological catastrophe, as I explained in my previous post, but also a severe threat to the future of an entire industry – the coffee industry. This region, home to some of the world's most unique coffee, is facing a crisis that could irreparably damage its prospects. Indian coffee is like no other. Grown amidst natural forests, it stands apart ecologically and aligns perfectly with global concerns about deforestation. The symbiotic relationship between coffee plants and the surrounding flora and fauna not only supports biodiversity but also results in coffee with rich, varied flavours. The beauty of Indian coffee lies in its diversity – coffee from every estate, and even every block within a large estate, has a distinct taste. This uniqueness is under threat from developmental projects like pipelines, large-scale private property developments, resorts, etc., which destabilise the land and cause devastating landslides. This is an ecological and economic disaster! India has tremendous potential to elevate its position on the global coffee map, boost exports, and showcase the unparalleled quality of our produce to the world. The local demand for coffee is also on the rise, and the industry is on the brink of tremendous growth. However, this potential is being jeopardised by the ongoing environmental destruction. As a fifth-generation coffee planter, I have witnessed firsthand the extraordinary trajectory of Indian coffee. It is disheartening to see the entire Karnataka-Kerala coffee belt, home to countless estates like mine, suffering. This is not just about heavy rainfall; it's about the unsustainable practices that are tearing apart the very fabric of our land. The reckless development is not only damaging coffee production but also undermining the potential of the entire industry. It is extremely crucial to protect the precious ecology of the Western Ghats as well as the future of the coffee industry. Corrective actions must be taken now, before it’s too late.
