New product: Stanwell Zebrano Sandblasted Bent Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
This shape 200 Zebrano from Stanwell confused me for a moment, as I thought it might have been mis-stamped, as I was sure this should be a shape 86, rather than a 200. Then I remembered – of course! This is the Featherweight reissue of the shape 86, which was sold as the 200. It is essentially a slightly scaled down version of Sixten Ivarsson’s iconic squat, wide, quarter-bent Dublin, which was originally designed in the 1960s. In around the year 2000, Tom Eltang helped create the Featherweight series, so I’m fairly certain he had a hand in reinterpreting this one too. Seeing it in the Zebrano series, which features a shank band made from exotic zebrawood and two amber-hued rings, is really something. As mentioned, this pipe is from the early 2000s, so it is a Made in Denmark piece with an acrylic stem.
The condition is near-mint. It comes from our trade-in program from a very careful collector. He took good care of this one, as with all of his pipes.
