Last month we had the opportunity to host a table at Glencoe High School as part of the Public Services Careers Exploration Day. This was our first ever career fair and these students certainly brought the heat. Here are some of the questions we were asked and our response: 1. How did we prepare for architecture college, during high school? Answer: I took drafting and furniture making classes in high school and spent a portion of some summers working construction. Knowing how things get built and how to illustrate that is very important in our profession. 2. How much money do you make? Answer: Typically, Architects begin their career with a higher entry level wage, and have less college debt, than many high profile professions. Architects do have a lower cap on maximum earnings than other professionals such as doctors, lawyers or those in finance however. Overall, being an Architect can provide a comfortable and financially secure lifestyle. 3. What is the coolest part about my job. Answer: I get to help shape the environment that people interact with everyday. Our work is always present and hopefully influences everybody in a positive way.

In today's world, where loneliness and isolation can contribute to a range of mental health challenges, apprenticeships present a unique opportunity for individuals to engage with experienced professionals who share their passion for a specific trade. This supportive environment enhances technical learning and fosters a sense of community and belonging. By connecting with mentors who are dedicated to their craft, apprentices gain insights, encouragement, and guidance that can significantly impact their personal and professional growth. Such relationships are essential in navigating the complexities of a chosen career path, making apprenticeships a vital investment in both skill and emotional well-being. #ctematters #apprenticeshipsmatter #reallifepracticalsolutions

You have 5 seconds to make a first impression at a trades fair. What is your company doing to capture that person's attention? Either that potential candidate keeps walking or stops and looks. Companies need to be intentional on how they highlight themselves. Are you attracting candidates by great benefits, high wages or is it something else? Today kids want to be inspired and work for companies That stand for something, and provide value. Core values Recognition Training Work life balance Mentorship Caring about employee mental health goes a long way. Sharing success stories of how someone climbed the ladder of success. Sharing stories of what you're building (roads, tunnels, buildings, schools) Creates jobs, gets people to work, provides education to kids, keeps our economy going. View it from the perspective of the younger generation. You might just find their motivators are different than yours. #skilledtrades #jointhetrades #bluecollar #STAC ↗ Hey, I'm Andrew I post every day at 8am est. ↗ I'm a skilled trades advocate. ↗ Check out our STAC foundation: https://lnkd.in/e75tyKva ↗ Join the movement Follow me Andrew Brown

Do you know what today is? If you guessed National Pepperoni Pizza Day, you’d be correct but that’s not the only day of recognition that falls on the third Friday in September. Today is National Tradesman Day, created in 2011 by Irwin Trades, a tool company whose origin dates back to 1885. Obviously, today is a big deal for those of us here at Bring Back the Trades, Inc. While our primary message is promoting the skilled trades as a sound, viable career choice for young men and women, we also seek to restore the dignity and prestige that’s been robbed from the skilled trades. The very first tradesmen date back to Ancient Egypt where tradesmen were placed just below royal scribes. The very first tradesmen were barbers and surgeons. People who couldn’t afford doctors would go to barbers to treat their medical needs! By the 12th century professional tradesmen started to create guild unions as a way of ensuring quality control and safer work environments. These highly respected crafts comprised far more than the building trades we commonly associate with the term tradesman and encompassed hat and boot makers, jewelers, glassblowers, typesetters, bookbinders and wheelwrights. During the Industrial Revolution the trades exploded with crafts such as sail-maker, candle-maker, cooper, taxidermist, canister-maker, furrier, cap-maker, dobbin-maker, baker, miller, brewer, confectioner, watch-maker, tinsmith, glazier, maltster, wood-turner, saddler, shipwright, scale-maker, engraver and cutler. Today opportunities in the skilled trades exist in not only the building trades but also the automotive industry (auto tech, diesel mechanic, auto body tech), manufacturing (welding and fabrication, machining and automation) and the service industries (chef, baker, barber, hair stylist). Many studies have shown that when taking student debt repayment into consideration, those who complete an apprenticeship in a skilled trade will realize higher lifetime median earnings than those with a university degree. At Bring Back the Trades, Inc we remain committed to introducing the skilled trades to those who wish to explore these career opportunities. This is not just limited to our young adults but also our returning veterans and anyone wishing to change careers. We provide scholarships, resources and mentoring, as well as career fair type events which allow hands-on exploration of the actual means and methods of various trades. #NationalTradesmanDay #BringBackTheTrades #skilledtrades #apprenticeship

Exciting Week Ahead! As the Alabama High School Outreach Coordinator for FORTIS Colleges and Institutes, I’ll be visiting Birmingham, Alabama this week for the Fall Festival College & Career Fair at Midfield High School this Thursday to meet with students and educators, discussing the critical role post-secondary education plays in preparing young people for successful careers in Alabama. 🎓 In our state, post-secondary education is more than just a next step—it’s a pathway to economic mobility, workforce readiness, and a stronger future. Whether it’s in skilled trades, healthcare, or other vital industries, continuing education equips students with the skills they need to succeed. 🥼 Alabama is projected to need over 10,000 new healthcare support workers by 2030 🥽 Alabama anticipates that skilled trades - Electricians, HVAC technicians, and plumbers will see growth rates of over 10% by 2030. 🤝 This is why partnerships between schools, communities, and trade colleges like Fortis are essential. Together, we can inspire students to explore these opportunities and support their journey toward a fulfilling career. If you're interested in learning more about how we can partner to support Alabama's future workforce, feel free to reach out! Let’s make a difference, one student at a time. #FortisInstitutes #AlabamaStudents #SkilledTrades #FutureOfWork #CareerAndTechnicalEducation
