Uncharitable sets out to change the way society views charities, and charitable giving, debunking the “overheads” myth and highlighting five key components that discriminate against charities: compensation, advertising and marketing, taking risks on new revenue ideas, time and profit to attract risk capital. It’s an essential exploration of the economics of the nonprofit sector and a catalyst for sparking broader conversation about the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of funders, donors, investors and the public towards charities. A research study in 2004 found investing too little in an organisation’s operational costs diminishes its effectiveness. Trying to operate on low overheads just stifles creativity, innovation and growth that is only going to enable greater change and impact in tackling societal issues.
