Back in June, the City of Atwater hired Chris Hoem to be their next city manager. It was his first city manager gig and he was coming off of being terminated as a department head a few months before. What would happen if you cut Alaska in half? Texas prides itself on its vast size. Yet, not a whole lot of attention is paid to the diversity of its various regions. These include cultural, landscape, economic, culinary, as well as a plethora of other things. Right in the middle, you have the Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex, which reminds me of LA without the hills or the beaches. To the east, you have what’s known as the Piney Woods. Unlike the El Paso area to the West, it’s a fertile area, lush with dense forests, lakes, and has a very strong Southern Culture. South of the DFW, you have what’s referred to as Central Texas. Known especially for the cities of Austin and Waco. In West Texas, you are surrounded by barren landscapes, and its heavy oil production. Bordering Mexico, you have a rich cultural area, and the origins of so much of what Texas is known for. To the south, you have the cities of San Antonio, Houston, as well as the Gulf Coast itself. Having grown up on the Pacific Coast, it is my favorite region of Texas, though the water is a lot warmer than I’m accustomed to. To the North is the Panhandle. If it was its own state, it would be the 41st biggest state in the country. There are several other regions worth mentioning, but they can’t all be fit into this space.
