Agrotourism in Indonesia has substantial untapped potential, offering unique experiences for visitors and additional income streams for local farmers. Developing sustainable agrotourism initiatives is crucial, and forming partnerships between the government, NGOs, and the private sector can provide the necessary support and resources.
Indonesia, with its abundant natural wealth and cultural heritage, holds great potential for agrotourism development. Moreover, agrotourism aligns with sustainable tourism principles by promoting environmental conservation and responsible resource management. It encourages practices such as organic farming, biodiversity conservation, and local food production, which are increasingly valued by environmentally conscious travelers.
In this episode of Y&S's in Minutes, our consultant Bertha Lovita Dwi Intania Permana will discuss about: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges in Agrotourism Development in Indonesia

Global Dialogue on Sustainable Ocean Development
July 1-5, 2024
Bali, Jakarta Raya, Indonesia
The Fifth Global Dialogue on Sustainable Ocean Development will bring together multi-disciplinary stakeholders from governments, international organizations, academia and research institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and others to discuss the progress and future pathways towards sustainable ocean development. The event will consider the role of complex, trans-disciplinary approaches in moving towards a sustainable blue economy, including sessions on sustainable ocean planning and environmental-economic accounting.
The Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) is hosting the Dialogue. GOAP is a global, multi-institutional partnership established to enable countries and other stakeholders to go beyond gross domestic product (GDP) to measure and manage progress toward sustainable ocean development. The Government of Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, co-chair the GOAP. The Partnership brings together governments, international organizations, and research institutions to build a global community of practice for ocean accounting.

The Lamaholot People: A Living Testament to Cultural Adaptation and Environmental Stewardship in Eastern Indonesia
We recently conducted an in-depth study of the Lamaholot people of East Flores, Indonesia, revealing a remarkable narrative of cultural resilience and environmental wisdom. This indigenous community, inhabiting the mountainous archipelago between the Flores and Sawu Seas, has developed sophisticated systems of environmental adaptation that seamlessly blend traditional knowledge with contemporary practices.
What particularly stands out is their intricate relationship with their environment, manifested through their traditional belief system, Rera Wulan Tana Ekan. This spiritual framework guides their sustainable resource management practices, from seasonal farming cycles to traditional fishing methods. Their agricultural practices demonstrate remarkable adaptability, with communities developing specialized knowledge based on their specific geographical locations – whether coastal, mountainous, or forest regions.
The Lamaholot's culinary traditions offer fascinating insights into sustainable food systems. Their seasonal dietary patterns and simple yet nutritious food preparation methods reflect deep environmental awareness and resource conservation. Traditional dishes like nasi kolo and ikan kuah asam not only preserve cultural heritage but also embody principles of sustainable consumption.
Perhaps most significantly, the Lamaholot people exemplify how indigenous communities can maintain cultural integrity while adapting to modern challenges. Their approach to environmental stewardship, combining traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary conservation needs, offers valuable lessons for sustainable development and cultural preservation in our rapidly changing world.
This research highlights the crucial intersection of cultural heritage and environmental conservation, demonstrating how traditional practices can inform modern sustainability efforts. The Lamaholot case study provides valuable insights for practitioners in environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.

After the devastating forest and peat fires in 2015, South Sumatra pioneered a new jurisdictional approach (JA) to sustainable land use. This innovative framework integrates environmental, social, and economic goals, empowering communities, the private sector, and NGOs alike.
Fast forward, JA has expanded to five provinces in Indonesia and influenced national efforts in Vietnam. As shared at the High-Level Forum on Multi-stakeholder Partnerships in Bali, this approach is driving inclusive green growth to address climate, biodiversity, and land challenges.

MARITIME HUB. Benoa Harbour in Bali is undergoing a major transformation to become a world-class port facility, supporting the Indonesian government’s vision to position Bali as a top tourist destination and maritime hub. The project includes expanding port capacity with new berths and terminals, modernizing existing facilities to meet international standards, and building a dedicated cruise terminal with world-class amenities. Sustainability is a key focus, incorporating renewable energy, waste management, and water conservation. This development is expected to boost Bali’s economy by attracting more tourists, enhancing connectivity, creating jobs in construction, tourism, and logistics, and improving the overall visitor experience, solidifying Benoa as a gateway to Bali and a key player in Indonesia’s maritime sector. On October 18, 2024, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) and the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia launched the Blue, Green, and Circular Economy (BGCE) guidelines. These guidelines will be incorporated into the government's plan as stated in the technocratic draft of the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). Wise Steps Consulting contributed as one of the consulting teams in the development of these guidelines, which were prepared last year.
Wise Steps Consulting was present at the BGCE guideline launch event as a speaker to explain the application of the BGCE Dimensions, Criteria, and Indicators in the tourism sector. These guidelines are specifically designed for four main subsectors: hospitality, food and beverage, transportation, and tourism destinations, and cover six important dimensions: sustainable resources, environmental conservation, eco-friendly product design, waste management, social inclusion and community empowerment, and BGCE governance.
The development of these guidelines is a significant step in building sustainable tourism in Indonesia and synergizing government programs with the industry. The implementation is expected to support national development strategies and drive the achievement of emission reduction commitments and the attainment of net zero emissions before 2060.

🌿 Exploring Sustainability in Thailand: My Visit to Huai Ngu Reservoir 🌿
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Huai Ngu Reservoir in Nong Khai, Thailand, a location that plays a significant role in the region’s water management and environmental sustainability.
This reservoir is not only crucial for irrigation and supporting local agriculture, but it’s also an ecological hotspot. The area supports biodiversity, and it’s a key site for birdwatching, part of the eBird network. It serves as an excellent example of how water resources can be managed to benefit both the environment and the community.
Thailand continues to make strides in sustainable agriculture and natural resource management, and I’m excited to see how sites like Huai Ngu can be leveraged to promote broader sustainability goals. 💧
B2B Energy is committed to putting Thailand on the map for its contribution to global sustainability efforts. The integration of natural resources like the Huai Ngu Reservoir with sustainable practices reflects how traditional systems can align with modern environmental goals.
🌱 Key Takeaways:
• Supports local agriculture through efficient water management.
• Enhances biodiversity and ecological balance.
• A shining example of eco-friendly practices in Thailand.
Looking forward to sharing more insights from this visit and how we can all contribute to a sustainable future! 🌍
