Well, I am Michelle Baker, the chief confidence igniter, and welcome to Mondays with Michelle. Today I'm going to be talking about the dynamic duo, confidence and empathy as the lever for great leadership. So let's get into it now. I want you to know that as we're talking about this, it takes confidence to be an empathetic leader. So we hear a lot about that empathy and. Being able to be vulnerable and meet your people where they are so that they can be more effective and productive. And if that person, that leader is not confident, none of this will happen. So what I want to share with you are three tips, a surprising fact in one. Immediately implementable tool to boost your leadership game. First tip, Empathy requires a self assurance. It requires that you feel confident in who you are. To truly empathize with others, you need to have a strong sense of yourself. So confidence is the foundation that allows you to put yourself in someone else's shoes without losing your footing. See, when you're confident, you're not threatened by what other people say. How they respond, their perspective, their emotions, you don't get. You don't waver when there's a right or wrong. Instead, you welcome these conversations. You see this as an opening and an opportunity to a deeper connection in a more meaningful relationship with the person that you're speaking with. Your colleague, your employee, your subordinate, whoever it is. This is affective and the standard for great leadership. Your ability. To be empathetic and not be impacted by what others are saying. Tip too. Confident leaders foster trust. Now when you're leading you with trust, that means that other people can sense it. And how do you establish trust? Well, this means that you open up and you share yourself. You let other people know that you are not perfect, that you make mistakes. This gives them the ability and. To feel like they can share their thoughts and their concerns. When people can thrive in this type of environment, there is a mutual respect and instead of trying to hide their mistakes or not wanting to do something for fear of making mistakes, you will create a more key, cohesive and innovative team. This is where people start to get excited about the possibilities of what they can create because they're not in fear of making mistakes and you know, great innovation comes from. Mistakes. So your ability to foster this environment is again, effective. And the first step to great leadership and tip #3 balancing the strength and vulnerability. Many people think still to this day that vulnerability is weakness. And again, if you think vulnerability is being weak, that means you're not confident because confident means simply that you don't have all the answers. It is a very vulnerable thing to be. Able to say you don't know to someone who is reporting to you or you're working with and this is about being open. And just because you don't know doesn't mean you can't find the answer. That's the confidence is that I don't know and I know where I can find it, or I know who I can contact or how soon do you need that? When can I get back to you? When you are confident, you are able to respond differently as a leader and work with your subordinate or your teammate. To come up with a solution that is a win, win, win. Empathetic leaders balance this strength and vulnerability, and they create a culture of continuous improvement and support so that everybody has the opportunity to improve. Now, I want to share with you that in the Journal of Business and Psychology, they found leaders who exhibit both confidence and empathy are rated more effective by their colleagues than anyone else. And also there's another fact that I wanted to share with you that in the New England Business Journal. And where is it? Let me look. OK, it's the Harvard Business Review. Leaders who exhibit high levels of confidence and empathy are more likely to inspire loyalty and commitment among their teens. And this leads to high retention rates and overall job satisfaction. So it's clear that the traits of combining empathy. And confidence are absolutely crucial for effective and. Great leadership. Now what can you do to the action step you can take today? Practice active listening. This is how you show empathy. People know you care when they feel heard. So instead of putting up listening to people while you're doing something else, put away all distractions. Put away the phone. Make a concerted and intentional effort to have full eye contact with the people that you're speaking with. So they can hear you. And above all else. Hold back the desire to interrupt. Many times leaders know they know the answer, and maybe the person you're speaking to is taking a long time to get to the question or get to the point. Yes, I know time is precious and you want to cut them off and if you truly want to exhibit greatness, allow them to finish speaking. People need to be heard. OK? Reflect back what you heard them say, right? Summarize what I think I hear you saying or what I heard you say, if I hear you correctly, and then move forward. This is active listening that really. Creates and fosters an environment for people to feel that they are trusted, that they're respected, and that what they're saying really matters. So again, the dynamic duo that will have you enhance and embolden and embody a great leader or the combination or empathy and confidence. Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you all next Monday.
I completely agree, 🔥Meshell R Baker🔥, that confidence is essential to being an open, honest, authentic, empathetic leader. I love your example of not knowing the answer and sharing this with others. A good leader states, "I don't have the answer but I'll find it for you."
