This feels important to share! Toxic positivity can be very oppressive, as if a way of denying one’s right to messy feelings and grief. It’s another form of being “nice” as opposed to “kind.” I’m doing a lot of thinking, writing, and sharing on the difference between the two. American womanhood has been socialized to be “nice,” but it’s often something toxic and selfish. And we have, further, been socialized to punish each other for being honest. I have a free cheat sheet on this subject and I think I’ll be doing a community chat about this soon, but I won’t share this stuff right now as our focus first needs to be on mutual aid and self care. I’ll likely be putting a link to it in the next Brave Sis project newsletter. (You can follow that at bravesis dot com.) For the opposite of nice/kind, the snarky ones saying rich Californians got what they deserve, I can only offer this for your soul: 1/ many working class and poor people live in SoCal and are either directly affected or will lose their livelihood and 2/ at every scale of our economy, our society has an unhealthy obsession with owning and acquiring stuff, be it a $50k Roche Bubois sectional or the Walmart easy chair you fight people over on Black Friday. Wasn’t it the Bible that said he who is without sin may cast the first stone? (Though a recovering Catholic and an Evangelist refugee, I remember the basics.) We need to take a break from the consumerist hamster wheel. Collective Achilles Heel. 😭😍
