I've been back in the UK now for about two weeks, and whilst it has indeed been unseasonably rainy (come on fellow Londoners, this has *got* to be worse than usual!), I've certainly been walking around a lot whilst getting my cycling logistics and trip-end facilities sussed out. One thing I've always appreciated in London's walking network (and am finding particularly useful now that I live in an entirely different part of town) is the wayfinding approach, led largely by TfL's "Legible London" guidance. This guidance, unlike what exists in many other places, is structured around specific user typologies - "the strider" and "the stroller" - who can then be either "novice" or "expert". Its development drew on real people's mental maps of space - how people perceive distance, direction and connections between places - and used this as a starting point for a series of widespread "fingerposts". I've usually been more of a "strider" side of things, having been trained on "easy mode" on the gridded streets around Times Square on high school trips up to NYC (sadly, for "safety", we were not allowed to go below 30th or above 59th) - but either because I'm in a new area or because in Singapore I learned that walking too quickly would just make me sweat more, I seem to move through space a bit more slowly these days. Whilst Google Maps is perfectly fine for "the expert strider", Legible London has made the experience of being a "stroller" much more enjoyable - highlighting historic buildings and juxtaposing quieter roads (typically straddled by fantastic architecture) with main arterials. It was via Legible London, not Google Maps, that I saw just how close I now was to the famed Abbey Road studios (and more famed zebra crossing outside). So, what am I trying to say? I suppose the main takeaway for me was the importance of empathy and seeing multiple perspectives (the "strider" and the "stroller") in anything relating to the built environment. Too often, we skip to the heuristic where "the user" is simply the average of all users - but, if we can avoid this reductionist view and truly consider the mosaic of society - we can build something so much better. Just like Legible London! https://lnkd.in/gYkbk9Xw
London has been ranked as a leading city for walking and biking tours in Europe. A real testament to the hard work that’s gone into expanding London’s cycleways and our green spaces. https://lnkd.in/eZqXFCrk
