The cultural dimension is key in conservation and should be integral part of conservation strategies
Conservation isn't just about protecting #nature—it's about embracing and learning new ways of listening while acknowledging the #cultures and #traditions of the communities living around #protected areas. #Culturalinclusion is key to successful conservation strategies. Here's why: 1. Respecting Traditional Knowledge: Local communities possess invaluable traditional knowledge and ways of life that can enhance conservation efforts. 2. Building Trust and Cooperation: Inclusive strategies foster trust and cooperation, leading to more sustainable outcomes. 3. Cultural Heritage Preservation: Protecting natural areas often means preserving cultural heritage sites and practices. By integrating cultural perspectives, we create more effective and sustainable conservation strategies that benefit both people and the planet. 📣 On this years Indigenous peoples day, we want to share knowledge on the importance of listening to and including Indigenous peoples in the conservation of our natural world. 🌍 Multiple studies now demonstrate that Indigenous peoples are some of the best stewards of naturing and it is this understanding that sits at the core of all of our projects. 📽 Watch this short video to learn about our work that links the efforts of Indigenous peoples to protect their landscapes to the global economic system, ensuring they are recognised and rewarded for their dedication. #indigenouspeoples #indigenousrights #nature https://lnkd.in/dE_6pR7Y

On this International Day of Forests, the Forests and Communities Initiative (FCI) is issuing a crucial call for action to protect forests and respect the rights of indigenous peoples. This call for action follows the first international conference of the Initiative, which was held in Monaco last November, and brought together over 100 participants, all of whom are signatories to the call. The call highlights the key challenges and proposes 19 concrete recommendations to overcome them. Some of the recommendations include the need to strengthen the protection of Indigenous territories, promote the participation of local communities in decision-making, and invest in conservation initiatives led by Indigenous Peoples. These measures aim to ensure the preservation of forest ecosystems while respecting the rights and traditions of local populations. Right now, Congress is considering the U.S. Foundation for International Conservation Act, federal legislation which would boost conservation worldwide and be a win-win for nature, wildlife and communities. Here’s why: 🐘 Scientists estimate we could lose half of all species by 2050 unless we act now. By conserving and restoring the habitats that species call home, this legislation would protect threatened plants and animals. 🤝 $100 million every year would go towards supporting local communities and Indigenous Peoples around the world who manage protected and conserved areas helping to bridge a longstanding gap in international conservation funding. 🏛️ This bill would stretch government dollars even further by incentivizing millions in private and philanthropic funding, because solving the habitat and species loss crises will require everyone. 🌎 Evidence shows that political stability depends on the stability of the natural world. By safeguarding lands and waters worldwide, the U.S. Foundation for International Conservation Act would promote U.S. and global security and stability. There’s never been a more important time for lawmakers to take action to support global conservation efforts. ⚖️ Territorial justice is the reclamation of access, #stewardship, and decision-making over #ancestral lands, waters, and resources for #indigenouspeoples. #Colonization has stolen and decimated indigenous territory, displacing communities and devastating the #environment. 🏞 ⛏ Today, colonization takes the form of rapidly expanding #unsustainable—and often illegal—extractive industries and industrial agriculture. For communities, being forced off their lands is more than a material loss. It is an erasure of lifeways that steward the environment, and spells disastrous consequences for nature. 🔥 🗣️ We work towards #territorialjustice by: ⏩️ Enabling communities to advocate for new #landrights and to achieve the expansion of land rights where they already exist. ⏩️ Brokering the establishment of #indigenousreserves and #indigenous co-creation of #protectedareas, and purchasing privately owned land and returning it to indigenous communities. ⏩️Upholding the protection of land rights and supporting long-term #indigenousstewardship. 📹 Learn more about our work supporting territorial justice in the video linked in our bio. #conservation #ancestralforests #amazonbasin #environmentalist #climateaction #forestconservation #sustainability #zerodeforestation #landback #amazonia #amazonrainforest #rainforest #animals #plants #savetherainforest
