The period of time between NOW and Thanksgiving is the most dangerous time to be on campus. More than 50% of sexual assaults on college campuses happen between welcome week and Thanksgiving. This is called the 🚨RED ZONE🚨 First-year students, sorority-affiliated students, gender-nonconforming students, and student-athletes are at a significantly increased risk of experiencing sexual violence at all times, especially during the Red Zone. For more info on the Red Zone, read "What is the Red Zone?" on our blog at https://lnkd.in/ehzfK4pk!

College life should feel secure and inclusive, but it's important to acknowledge that some might misuse this feeling of safety to commit sexual violence. Students can actively contribute to a safer campus by becoming proactive bystanders. Learning safe ways to step in can prevent potential assaults. Personal safety is also crucial, and while no measures can guarantee total protection, being informed about the steps you can take is a good start. Sexual violence is never the victim's fault, and support is always available at WOAR. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, please call 215.985.3333. WOAR can help!

Language really matters, as do actions, responses, ethos, culture and interactions. Being present in school does not mean the same thing as being present in learning situations. Just because children are in school does not mean they are ready and able to learn. Need to make sure schools are able to ensure that pupil's needs to feel connected, safe, cared for and nurtured by positive, attuned adults BEFORE learning can take place. It's not just about attending school, it's about what happens and how children feel when they are there, that really matters to learning. Emotions, relationships and experiences are what matters most to learning. This is why some children will always be more able to learn at home whilst others will always be more able to learn at school. The context of children's lives and their needs are varied, a one size fits all education system is no longer good enough and needs to change.
The language we use to talk about school attendance makes me angry. Persistent is a word we use in the criminal justice system; Unauthorised places too much judgement on the situation. I love the work Not Fine In School and Square Peg are doing around the #3Asks. 1. Mental Health Absence Code 2. Attendance Code of Practice 3. End Truancy Laws It's time for a change. Let's push this message. In a year of an election, we can get our voices heard. https://lnkd.in/d4z3HEQ9

You know when public schools are failures when they allow bullying of other students to attack other students and there has to be a police officer at the schools padding children down to make sure there’s no weapons. In my opinion, all public schools should be defunded until strict standards are taken to prevent bullying by students. Or as we have in Florida, students have a choice to go to private schools or charter schools. Either way teachers' unions in public schools have failed their students in learning. It’s about politics.

Studies show that almost 3 million public school students receive one or more out-of-school suspensions every year. And just one out-of-school suspension increases a child's chances of entering the juvenile justice system. For #WIWTK, I had a great conversation with Dr. Tammy Hughes, school psychologist and professor, to discuss what teachers and school leaders can do to combat the school-to-prison pipeline.
