What is a particle accelerator? Watch my clever husband Tom McGoram explain what they are and why we need them.
What is a particle accelerator? Dr Tom McGoram, CEO of Heavy Ion Accelerators (HIA) shares how particle accelerators help drive innovations in medicine, space technology, health and material science in Australia and around the world. HIA is supported by the department’s NCRIS program which provides researchers and industry access to key infrastructure to drive innovation. For those in Canberra, HIA is holding an Open Day on Saturday 10 August 2024. These videos from our European team never get old! Imagine not being able to recognize people on the street or read text. This is what happens to late-stage AMD patients—they lose the ability to do these seemingly simple tasks. But, after the implantation of the first intraocular telescope, the SING IMT, these patients can regain their independence back. This patient recounts her transformation with a low vision rehabilitation expert at her rehabilitation session. Note, the SING IMT is not available in the U.S. #ophthalmology #medicaldevice #lifesciences #medicaltechnology

The Navy SEAL Foundation was honored to support a ground-breaking study by PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) on the impacts of repeated blast exposure on active-duty Special Operations Forces, and the results were just released. Key takeaways from this study indicate that higher blast exposure is linked to increased cortical thickness in the left rostral anterior cingulate cortex, which affects cognition and emotion. This brain alteration, along with changes in structure, function, and neuroimmune markers, can reduce the quality of life. Researchers are planning future studies and hope to develop a reliable diagnostic test for repeated blast brain injuries. Dr. Brian Edlow from Massachusetts General Hospital will present the results of the reblast study to medical and healthcare professionals from across the country at NSF's upcoming Impact Forum. The 2024 International Myopia Conference may have ended, but we are just getting started in sharing more about the eye-opening studies we presented there. We revealed news on the significant slowing of myopia progression in a Chinese population after six months of Diffusion Optics Technology (DOT) spectacle lens wear* plus new interim data from a U.S. study on the absence of a rebound effect following the cessation of DOT lens wear**. Over the coming weeks, SightGlass Vision will bring you insights from real world analysis gathered from practices in China and Canada, explore the performance of DOT in younger patients, and share further in-depth science around the use of contrast management to control myopia. *Chen et al. How understanding the link between chronic oxidative stress from high-LET IR exposure and the systemic levels of 8-OxodG, and associated health risks, can develop a comprehensive biomarker system for health monitoring of astronauts during space missions and enhance long-term health outcomes. This review explores 8-OxodG as a potential biomarker for chronic stress induced by high-LET radiation. It highlights its sources, formation, repair mechanisms, and detection methods. Additionally, the review examines the pathobiological effects of high-LET ionizing radiation (IR) exposure and its relationship with 8-OxodG. By understanding the link between chronic oxidative stress from high-LET IR exposure, systemic levels of 8-OxodG, and associated health risks, we can develop a comprehensive biomarker system for health monitoring. This system aims to protect the well-being of astronauts during space missions and enhance long-term health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/e4e7bHbw #oxidativeDNAdamage #highLET #radiation #astronauts #space #radiation #SPE #GCR #CosmicRays
