As a country we legislate as a mode of protection. It is illegal to take drugs, it is illegal to vape, it is illegal to smoke and drink if you're under 18, it is illegal to etc etc etc. Now it will be illegal to use social media if you are under a certain age. It's reactive. Prohibition historically has not been the solution, often making activities more clandestine and riskier. As youth workers we use concepts of empowerment, education, accountability, needs led activities and programs, co-design. Yes, social media can have a negative impact on people of all ages. Yes young people are more vulnerable. When young people move across the arbitrary legislated age limit they will remain vulnerable. Investment in social change, community, community programs and education would be impactful and have long term positive benefit. Lets be proactive and make an investment that will empower our youth to make positive and healthy decisions around social media and other aspects of their lives. Passing mandates is one thing, making change another.
The evidence is in: social media is causing harm to our kids. We’re doing something about it and legislating a minimum age for social media.
